The Complaint, and the path to Interrelated Multidimensional Diagnoses, describes the how Michael R. Bütz, Ph.D. came to introduce the concept of Interrelated Multidimensional Diagnoses in order to describe Parental Alienation and Munchausen’s Syndrome by Proxy and/or Factitious Disorder by Proxy more accurately. His early efforts included collaborations with F. Barton Evans, Ph.D. and Becky Webber-Dereszynski, LCPC, that produced the first article in 2009, and then a second article in 2019 with Dr. Evans.Bütz, M. R., Evans, F.B., Webber-Dereszynski, R. (2009). A practitioner’s complaint and proposed direction: Munchausen Syndrome By Proxy, Factitious Disorder By Proxy and Fabricated and/or Induced Illness in Children. "Professional Psychology: Research & Practice", 40(1), 31-38.Bütz, M. R. and Evans, F.B. (2019). Factitious Disorder by Proxy, Parental Alienation, and the Argument for Interrelated Multidimensional Diagnoses. "Professional Psychology: Research and Practice", 50(6), 364-375. http://dx.doi.org/10.1037/pro0000250.This work ultimately led to Dr. Bütz’s book on the topic that was published Routledge in the summer of 2020, "Parental Alienation and Factitious Disorder by Proxy, Beyond DSM-5: Interrelated Multidimensional Diagnoses". In the book, Dr. Bütz has created a new way to identifying and understanding these challenging phenomena, a shift away from individual diagnoses to relational and systems diagnoses, and a two-stage diagnostic process that addresses suspicions of these pathologies and the necessity of further study. He has advanced the idea that these complex pathological phenomena are the accumulation of individual characteristics and symptoms, family and other system dynamics as an Interrelated Multidimensional Diagnoses. This somewhat unfiltered podcast describes the meandering path that began for Dr. Bütz in graduate school, and eventually leads him through experiences in his professional life to introduce Interrelated Multidimensional Diagnoses in order to stem the abuses suffered by children by these pathological processes.Dr. Bütz works as clinical, forensic and neuro psychologist in Montana. He has been licensed in a number of other states, such as Idaho, Maine and Wyoming. He received his master’s degree from San Francisco State University and his doctorate from Wright Institute in Berkeley, California. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association. Dr. Bütz has put forward numerous publications and presentations, and he is best known for his work on the integration of nonlinear dynamics into behavioral healthcare.
