Dr. Joedrecka Brown Speights: Well-being and Inclusivity in Family Medicine Inside Family Medicine

    • Business

In this Inside Family Medicine episode, Team AAFP’s Emily Holwick talks with Joedrecka Brown Speights, M.D., FAAFP,  about the power of mentorship; the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion in medical education; and how DEI can help physicians improve their well-being.
Dr. Brown Speights is chair, professor and clinician in the Department of Family Medicine and Rural Health at Florida State University College of Medicine in Tallahassee. In 2017, she was an inaugural fellow of the George Washington University Leaders for Health Equity International Fellowship, now known as the Atlantic Fellows for Health Equity. That experience, she told AAFP National Conference attendees in 2020, helped her "solidify and articulate the things I wanted to do."
"If you’d like to help people thrive and flourish in life, medicine is a great career choice and especially family medicine,” she says in this episode. The conversation touches on the Academy’s  EveryONE Project and the AAFP’s upcoming 2024 Physician Health and Well-being Conference, where Dr. Brown Speights co-presents a pre-conference panel titled "Well Women in Medicine: Sustaining Successful Clinicians, Educators, Researchers, and Leaders in Medicine" (May 5) and, during the conference, an individual workshop titled "Well Women in Medicine: Addressing DEI to Thrive" (May 6).
