Conversation With a Geographer

Michael S. DeVivo, PhD, professor of geography at Grand Rapids Community College, welcomes fellow geographers to discuss their unique stories as well as the application of geographical studies to a wide variety of disciplines. Mike is also an author, PhD external examiner, and corresponding member of the International Geographical Union Commission on the History of Geography and the International Geographical Union Commission on African Studies. These interviews are inspired by the "Geographers on Film" series by Maynard Weston "Wes" Dow. See GRCC's YouTube channel for past interviews.

    Rebecca Lave, PhD, is Associate Dean for Social and Historical Sciences as well as a professor of geography at Indiana University Bloomington, where her work bridges human, physical, economic, and political geography.     Dr. Alexander Murphy

    Alexander Murphy, PhD, is Professor Emeritus of Geography at the University of Oregon, where he held the Rippey Chair in Liberal Arts and Sciences from 1998-2019. He specializes in political, cultural, and environmental geography, particularly in Europe and the Middle East. He is a past president of the American Association of Geographers and currently Senior Vice President of the American Geographical Society. Hosted by Mike DeVivo.     Scott Warren, PhD, is a cultural geographer and humanitarian aid worker living in the border town of Ajo, Arizona. He was arrested in 2018 for allegedly harboring unauthorized migrants while working with No More Deaths / No Más Muertes, a group that aims to prevent the deaths of migrants crossing the Sonora Desert.     Dr. Susan Hanson

    Susan Hanson, PhD, is a Distinguished University Professor Emerita of the Graduate School of Geography at Clark University. As an urban geographer and a pioneer for women in the field, she has been the president of the American Association of Geographers and editor of four geographic journals as well as the International Encyclopedia of Behavioral and Social Sciences. She now serves on numerous advisory boards for the National Research Council. Hosted by Mike DeVivo.
