Season 2 Episode 16: Interview with Michele Wellman

Season 2 Episode 16: Interview with Michele Wellman

Welcome to the Dressage Today Podcast, sponsored by the HorseWare Ireland. In this episode, Stephanie and Aviva share what they are grateful for from the past year and discuss what makes a good show scribe. Then they talk to Michele Wellman with whom Dressage Today OnDemand recently did a series of videos on her popular cavalletti clinics.
Michele is a full-time trainer and instructor at By Chance Farm in Union Bridge, Md. Sixteen years as a Mechanical Engineer and Project Manager allowed her to build By Chance Farm into the business it is today. She has spent most of her riding career eventing through the Preliminary level on multiple horses, taking two to USEA Year End Awards and Area II Championships. In 2003, Michele started focusing on dressage a bit more. In 2011, she received her USDF Bronze medal and her Silver medal in 2015. In addition to the cavalletti clinics, Michele hosts a series of popular dressage schooling shows and licensed shows throughout the year.

Season 2 Episode 15: Interview with Robert Dover

Season 2 Episode 15: Interview with Robert Dover

Welcome to the Dressage Today Podcast, sponsored by the HorseWare Ireland. Stephanie and Aviva discuss participating in the USDF’s L Education Program. The interview in this podcast is different. In August, Stephanie interviewed Robert Dover to get his perspective on the Tokyo Olympics for Practical Horseman magazine. The interview contained many wonderful stories, and space in the magazine was limited so a lot was left out. We decided to put the rest of it together for this podcast as it almost coincides with the release of his book, The Gates to Brilliance: How a Gay, Jewish, Middle-Class Kid Who Loved Horses Found Success. It is currently available to pre-order and is scheduled to be available on November 9.

Originally from Kansas, Philesha started riding at age 8 and developed her love for dressage as a young rider. Upon winning the show, Philesha also was presented with the opportunity to be Robert Dover's assistant trainer for a year. After that, she was an assistant trainer for Arlene "Tuny" Page and worked as a flat rider for Show Jumper, Kent Farrington. Season 2 Episode 13: Interview with Chelsea Canedy

Season 2 Episode 13: Interview with Chelsea Canedy

Welcome to a “mindful” episode of the Dressage Today Podcast, sponsored by the Horse Care Loyalty Rewards Program.  Hosts Stephanie Ruff and Aviva Nebesky first discuss their ideas of what makes a good student, and then Aviva talks about her favorite test and level to judge in her “Ask the L” segment.
They interview Chelsea Canedy about her road to enlightenment and how that has influenced her professional career as a dressage and event rider. Chelsea grew up in Connecticut where she was a member of Litchfield Pony Club, earning her H-A certificate before leaving for college. After riding throughout college, she moved to Northeast Tennessee, where her eyes were opened to some horsemanship ideas and tools that she had never seen before. She tweaked and utilized those tools as she expanded her business to a large facility in Virginia, bringing several horses up the levels in dressage and eventing before selling them for their owners and running a private client's business as well. Chelsea is currently based in Wales, Maine and is helping connect riders in that area to the bustling world of dressage and upper-level eventing from her home base at Unexpected Farm.

Season 2 Episode 12: Interview with Morgan Klingensmith

Season 2 Episode 12: Interview with Morgan Klingensmith

In this special Olympic wrap-up episode, sponsored by Vita Flex, co-hosts Stephanie Ruff and Aviva Nebesky share their thoughts on the recent Olympic dressage event. The conversation shifts to what the riders were wearing and Aviva’s latest saddle pad adventure. That rolls right into the "Ask the L" question about the preferred color of gloves when showing.
Together they interview Morgan Klingensmith, who has gained notoriety as the groom of Adrienne Lyle’s Olympic mount Salvino. Morgan was born and raised in Ohio, growing up just a few miles from where she works full time at Betsy Juliano’s Havensafe Farm. As a young girl, she spent much of her time riding ponies and started lessons in eventing at age 10, competing in that discipline until a few years ago. She started working for Betsy in 2014 at her Ohio barn and moved to her show horses in the fall of 2016. Morgan’s job as a full-time, professional groom keeps her very busy and on the go. She takes time out to share an insider’s perspective of the Olympic dressage event.

Needs Improvement

I want this show to be so much better, but from the sound quality to the content, this feels more like a podcast put together in a person’s basement rather than the professional journalism I’d expect from Dressage Today or Practical Horseman. I hoped that maybe the new host lineup would help things, but in their initial interview with Janet Foy, the sound quality was terrible and no one had edited the different volume levels between interviewer and interviewee, so it sounded like the DT questions were being yelled in my ears but I strained to hear Janet Foy’s answers. It was a bummer.

Right now, The Horse and Hound podcast continues to be the gold standard for equestrian podcasts. I’d love to see this one achieve a similar standard, with informative reporting on news stories and developments and professional interviews to offer new tips and insights. Unfortunately, the Dressage Today podcast has a long way to go.
