On this week’s EcoRadio KC, Terri Wilke speaks with Sunaura Taylor, an artist and writer. She is the author of "Beasts of Burden: Animal and Disability Liberation" (The New Press, 2017), which received the 2018 American Book Award. Taylor has written for a range of popular media outlets and her artworks have been exhibited widely both nationally and internationally. She works at the intersection of disability studies, environmental justice, multispecies studies, and art practice. She is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management at the University of California, Berkeley. Her latest book is "Disabled Ecologies: Lessons from a Wounded Desert" (University of California Press, 2024). How do illness and disability function in ecological thinking, other than as a cautionary tale? First, we can center the relational networks between bodies and environments.  Second, we can refuse to abandon people who and landscapes that have been harmed.  Finally, we can commit to challenging the social and economic inequalities that are the root causes of the harm. We support the work for a future in which humans flourish as members of a thriving ecosphere. We are all in this together and it will take all of us to make the world safe. This will be a great radio hour!   “The whole world is one neighborhood.”  Franklin D. Roosevelt

On this week’s EcoRadio KC, we feature another episode of Aunt Lainie’s Kitchen podcast.  Produced each week by KKFI volunteer, Lainie Renee, listeners can gather round the table to hear interviews and conversations centering around food and beverage in the Kansas City Metro area.   https://auntlainieskitchen.com/   EcoRadio KC is lucky that Lainie allows us to feature this amazing podcast. Tonight, we will hear What October Means to Me. October can have many meanings to people. October is the start of fall in the Northern Hemisphere, with cooler weather and falling leaves. Today, October has a federal holiday - Columbus Day - better known as Indigenous Peoples Day. This day officially celebrates the anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas, however, approximately 29 states, Washington, D.C. and about 216 cities have renamed it or replaced it with Indigenous Peoples Day. The main reason Columbus Day draws opposition is because of how the colonization of the New World negatively affected Indigenous people with disease, enslavement and famine. At the end of our hour, Aunt Lainie has provided a bonus bite.   We support the work for a future in which humans flourish as members of a thriving ecosphere. We are all in this together and it will take all of us to make the world safe. This will be a great radio hour!   “The whole world is one neighborhood.”  Franklin D. Roosevelt

    WE’VE GOT THEM – LET’S REUSE THEM!

Thanks for listening to EcoRadio KC! We bring you vital information underserved or ignored by mainstream media. We are supported by listeners who share our mission. EcoRadio KC is glad to encourage awareness and protection of our world.  Our goal is to ensure our listeners are aware of how we can create a sustainable present for a sustainable future! It will take us all to make the world safe for habitation for millennia to come. On today’s show, host Terri Wilke will speak with her guest, Linda Klinker about her brainchild, Cans for the Community. Cans for the Community was formed in May of 2005 in Lawrence, Kansas, with the belief that the simple act of recycling aluminum cans could benefit the community in more than one way.  Recycling aluminum can save valuable resources AND it generates funds for the good of the community.  It is a simple idea with powerful results! http://cansforthecommunity.org/ Volunteers for Cans for the Community collect aluminum cans for recycling from businesses, apartment complexes, community recycling drop-off bins and at local events such as football games.  All proceeds from recycling are donated to local non-profit organizations. Clearly marked Cans for the Community aluminum can bins are distributed to participating businesses in Douglas County, Kansas.  There are also  recycling drop-off bins for households and smaller businesses. Aluminum has been produced since the early 1800’s.  It is easily reused and today approximately 75% of all aluminum produced in history is still in use.  It pays to recycle aluminum and when the cash is put to good use in the community – that is a win/win! We support the work for a future in which humans flourish as members of a thriving ecosphere. We are all in this together and it will take all of us to make the world safe. LET’S TALK ABOUT CLIMATE ISSUES

On today’s show, we will play the Climate Hour -  Reframing The Climate Conversation Now - produced by Bob Grove. When was the last time you talked about climate issues with a friend or family member? Studies find that the majority of people are concerned about climate but don’t talk about it. Why has something as universal as the climate conversation become such a political football that it’s a forbidden topic at family holiday gatherings? In 2002, a prominent republican pollster circulated a strategy guide advising his candidates to talk about “climate change” instead of global warming. His research found that the concept of climate change was less threatening. Global warming was a crisis. Climate change was like taking a ski trip. He effectively created a talking point that de-escalated and delayed climate action for over 20 years. So words do matter. Words can inspire hope and action. Or they can discourage and silence our voices. How do we find that balance between inspiring hope and addressing the urgency of a situation. How do we reframe the climate conversation? Join host, Bob Grove, and guests to discuss Reframing the Conversation. Guests include: Adam Ratner, Director of Conservation Engagement, The Marine Mammal Center Hannah Phillips, Manager of Docents and Interpreters, Education Department, Saint Louis Zoo Kait Birghenthal, President & Project Coordinator, National Network for Ocean and Climate Change Interpretation (NNOCCI) Dr. Megan Ennes, Assistant Curator of Museum Education and Director of the Thompson Earth Systems Institute, Florida Museum of Natural History To learn more, visit … https://MarineMammalCenter.org https://stlzoo.org https://NNOCCI.org https://www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/earth-systems/ https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C6JPDD24   This will be a great radio hour! https://kkfi.org/listen/ “The whole world is one neighborhood.”  Franklin D. THE WHOLE WORLD IS ONE NEIGHBORHOOD

On today’s show, host Richard Mabion and his co-host Richard Gutowski will recap the recent hours they have broadcast concerning community connections.  There is no doubt this is an appropriate topic for EcoRadio KC.  After all, what does “ecology” mean? Ecology is the study of the relationships between living organisms, including humans, and their physical environment; it seeks to understand the vital connections between plants and animals, including humans, and the world around them. What do neighborhoods mean to us? A neighborhood is an area where people live and interact with one another.  Neighborhoods tend to have their own identity, or "feel" based on the people who live there and the places nearby. Residents may have similar types of families, incomes, and education levels. Neighborhoods can include restaurants, bookstores, and parks. Neighborhoods often have fuzzy geographical boundaries, so sometimes it's difficult to tell where one starts and another ends. Neighborhood residents generally have similar incomes, as well as similar social characteristics such as education level, housing preference, and sense of public order. Sometimes, the dominant ethnicity in a neighborhood defines its character. When people band together in this way, it strengthens their sense of community and preserves cultural traditions. This will be a great radio hour! “The whole world is one neighborhood.”  Franklin D. Roosevelt
