Welcome to City Stories, the podcast by Energy Cities. Energy Cities is the European city network of local authorities in energy transition with over 1000 members from 30 countries. This podcast is for those who want to learn more about how cities go about with the energy transition.     Interview on energy poverty and ill-health with Dr. Lucie Middlemiss and Beverley Searle

    Since the energy crisis started a few years ago, we hear more often about energy or fuel poverty. But how often do we talk about the concrete challenges and also the coping strategies of the people affected by it? And what does it mean for people’s health when they live in very cold or very hot homes? Our guests today are two brilliant researchers from the University of Leeds: Lucie Middlemiss and Beverly Searle. They have been leading the qualitative data collection in the WELLBASED project, looking at how people in energy poverty felt in their homes, how they dealt with limited access to energy and how this impacted their health and wellbeing. In our conversation Lucie and Beverley share their invaluable insights from over 150 qualitative interviews with people across six cities. We discuss the fragile health condition of people in energy poverty and try to untangle the many complex reasons for it.     SCCALE episode about public acceptance in energy community projects

    No risk, no fun. No risk, no failure… This is what experienced somme energy community pioneers on the Aland islands, an archipelago between Finland and Sweden. In the municipality of Kökar, an energy community around solar, urban wind and storage was meant to bring new flexibility to the island’s energy system. You will hear that this has turned into a bad adventure with 1 or 2 strong and loud opponents managing to sabotage the project. I’ve spoken about navigating public perception of local energy projects with Niclas Karlsson who is Municipal Director of Kökar, one of the small municipalities of Aland (300 inhabitants) and Jonas Holmstrom who is working for the energy company Flexens. The energy community planned in the framework of a project, co-funded by the EU, never happened. What can developers and local governments do when they have a renewable energy project but are running into public resistance? How to make people understand that there is more to gain than to lose?     SCCALE episode about community energy strategies in a small paradise in Croatia

    Ugo and Franjo are, respectively, President and Manager of this energy cooperative called Apsyrtides. In this episode they tell us how community work is driving their island’s energy transition, but also how Croatian law is still not ready for it. They are about to design a voucher model in cooperation with the water management company to allow residents to co-finance smaller solar projects. We also talked about the need for long-term secure electricity contracts with PPAs being still a promising but hard-to-realise option in Croatia.     SCCALE episode about degrowth & energy communities with Chris Giotsitsas

    The wind has turned again for energy communities in Greece: a recent change in law now forbids, for example, the participation of businesses. This shift leaves more than one community energy initiative puzzled. And still, community leaders keep on fighting for it as a means to bring environmental and social sustainability – ultimately also as a means to turn the blurry degrowth concept into something very concrete. Chris Giotitsas, with whom I've met for this episode, says: "Well, degrowth is a pretty loaded term on its own. When applied to energy, it's even more complex because questions arise as to what types of energy needs are considered the baseline and how much energy is considered enough when we're talking about reaching a certain limit and then considering limits themselves." Chris is researcher at Peer to Peer Lab and President of the energy community ttps://commonen.gr in the North of Greece. CommonEn was founded in May 2021 in Ioannina. Its purpose is the production and management of clean and cheap energy. One of his planned energy community projects is about urban agrivoltaics involving people with mental health issues. To make this happen, the energy community closely works together with the municipality of Ioannina.     SCCALE interview about an emerging heat community in The Netherlands

    Today we are in Zwolle, around 1h20 drive from Amsterdam. The town of 130.000 inhabitants has a beautiful medieval centre. Today’s guest, Olaf Heinen, lives in the neighbourhood of Assendorp, more specifically in the area of Sallandsweide.This area is composed of very different types of houses and holds a very diverse group of residents. This is also where most of the city’s low-income people live. A few years ago, Olaf and his neighbours wondered how they could make their 170 homes more comfortable, their heating cleaner and their streets greener. Olaf can be called an “entrepreneurial activist” and during the interview you’ll understand why. He explains how conversations around the kitchen table led to the idea of installing a heating network owned by the residents. Olaf is a trained energy consultant and since several years he puts his knowledge at the service of his own neighbourhood, as part of the program 50 shades of Assendorp which is a pilot area for the SCCALE 20-30-50 project.     Some say the energy transition is a great opportunity to create a more equal society. Others are more pessimistic and predict that the transition will worsen inequalities. How does reality look like and what solutions do we already have at hand to guarantee fair access and good lives to all, no matter their income, race, religion, gender? I’m delighted to talk about inclusive cities and communities with two trailblazing women: Kata Tütto and Antonia Proka. Kata is Deputy Mayor at the City of Budapest, and candidate for this year’s European Parliament election in Hungary. Antonia represents the world of cooperatives: She is project manager at RESCoop.eu and co-author of the Inclusivity Guide for Energy Communities that was released a few months ago.     SCCALE episode on public procurement for energy communities

    We all try to make green choices for a more sustainable world. And so do local authorities as public buyers. Through public procurement authorities buy work, goods or services. Green public procurement means those authorities use their purchasing power to support the clean energy transition. In this episode of City Stories, Efren Guillò Sansano who is the Head of Innovation at the Spanish cooperative Grupo Enercoop explains how bidding processes can pave the way for energy communities. In our conversation, Efren takes the example of Crevillent, a Spanish municipality close to Alicante. A few years ago, the Crevillent City Council created a concession procedure for rooftop solar on municipal buildings and they added special community criteria. One of them was that 80% of the electricity produced on municipal roofs should be shared with local citizens. Learn more in my conversation with Efren.     This episode is with Carlo Tacconelli. Carlo is an international energy expert and CEO of EnGreen, anItalian renewables start-up. Carlo has 16 years of experience in distributed renewable energy systems in Europe and in developing countries. Carlo shares some of that experience in this episode, with a special focus on the incredible power of energy communities. We left our conversation with much optimism as Carlo talks about all the positive side effects energy communities can bring. We particularly enjoyed listening to him when he talked about the potential of a rural revival. As shared renewable energy is becoming more popular in villages and is creating jobs, we might be able to reverse the trend of rural communities hollowing out.
