This is an above average podcast about an above average record label. I hope it never ends.

These can be great, when they’re focused and have relevant guests. Occasionally (the Repeater +3 ep) these thing veer into interviews with “some guy who booked Fugazi once and knows little about them” and “my son’s friend who’s never heard the band.” These are important records and I’m certain there are many pertinent interviewees who’d love to talk about the music. Also the occasional guest Ben is not cut out for this. On other occasions, though, these guys nail it and bring to life a great exploration. Still… a host who believes “Can I Say” is the best Dischord release while disparaging “Red Medicine” and another who grinds axes about “Facet Squared” (one of the finest opening tracks of the 1990s) while unequivocally worshipping Rites of Spring can be maddening for the listener. Fugazi was the apotheosis not only of Dischord but of punk as a genre—all else falls beneath, including the rest of the Dischord catalog. Instrument is one of the aesthetically-germane music films ever assembled, a perfect representation of Fugazi’s ethos, and these fellas find a way to get it wrong.

The source material here, of course, is exceptionally good, and deserves the extensive analyses offered. Episodes are a meal of many courses, usually culminating with insightful interviews with the artists that made the music. You will think. You will learn. You will geek-out.
