Today, Madeleine is joined by Danni Washington as they discuss what it means to step into your powers for the betterment of the world. Tapping into her specific climate superpowers, Danni shares her journey to science communications beginning with her upbringing in Miami and early interest in marine biology. Danni reminds us that our journeys to action and activism do not have to be linear. Finding and maintaining passion for your work is a lifelong task.
Centering the conversation in the need for diverse perspectives and experiences within climate work, Danni dives into her experience as a Black woman in marine science, what it means to be a role model for younger generations, and how to fight to overcome barriers to access within climate science. As Danni continues her work as a science communicator, we are so excited to see her highlighting vital voices as she broadens access to climate science.
Danni Washington is fierce, focused, and on a mission. As a world-renowned television host and science communicator, Washington is the first African-American woman to host a nationally broadcast syndicated science television series. She is presently the host of The Genius Generation podcast produced by Seeker and Trax which spotlights young people behind an incredible invention, entrepreneurial pursuit, or discovery using science. Washington also served as a correspondent on CBS's Mission Unstoppable, a weekly program highlighting fascinating female innovators thriving on the cutting edge of science, Xploration Nature Knows Best on FOX, a series predicated on ingenuity in biomimicry meant to expose younger generations to inventions inspired by nature. Additional projects include "Science the $#!* Out Of It," for the popular Facebook Watch vertical, Untamed Science for Pearson Publishing, and Ocean GEMS. Washington continues to educate youth on the importance of ocean conservation, STEM innovation and environmentalism using mediums that acutely connect: science, arts and media. Her simplification of what is at stake with our planet makes her a mainstay in conservation and STEM advocacy.
