Nick is joined by David Yates to remember Alastair Down, the finest racing writer of his generation, who died yesterday at the age of 68. Also on today's show, Nick has the final word on the Breeders' Cup at Del Mar in the company of Kevin Blake, who also put his case as regards the controversial vet withdrawals that have once again impacted on events in Melbourne and in California. Plus, trainers Ger Lyons, who has some interesting views on racing at Newmarket as well as his own Breeders' Cup runner Magnum Force, and George Boughey join the show from Del Mar. Meanwhile, TIEA Community Award winner Lauren Semple tells Nick how this year's success has helped her crucial work to continue.

The Saturday Edition - Ep. 144

It's all things Breeders' Cup Saturday on today's show as Charlotte Greenway recaps on the interview this week with connections of runners at Del Mar tomorrow. To kick off we hear from the two leading contenders in Breeders' Cup Classic, City of Troy (Aidan O'Brien) and Fierceness (Mike Repole & John Velasquez). Then onto the the Turf Mile as Donnacha O'Brien looks forward to Porta Fortuna whilst George Boughey has the latest on his two runners for Highclere Racing, Believing who goes in the Turf sprint and Soprano who steps up in trip for the F&M Turf.

Ep 1124 - Breeders' Cup Tricks and Treats

Nick brings you this edition once again from the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club ahead of this year's Breeders' Cup. On today's show, he talks to Hall of Famer John Velazquez about his favourite Breeders' Cup memories and his chances on leading Classic hopeful Fierceness. Plus, Donnacha O'Brien lifts the lid on Port Fortuna's preparation for the Mile, Hugo Palmer assesses where his brace of two year olds might fit in the juvenile turf, while Rachel King ponders riding a Japanese winner before heading to Melbourne to ride in the Cup. Insight and analysis is provided by broadcaster Michelle Yu and jockey-turned-tv personality and work rider Jess Pyfer. Nick also catches up with Grace Sowa from Breeders' Cup partner brand Surfside while, back home as the jumping ramps up, Goffs UK MD Tim Kent has details of this week's show and sale for National Hunt foals.

Ep 1123 - Were the Aussie vets heroes or villains?

Nick - in Del Mar, CA, ahead of Breeders' Cup - is joined from Melbourne by Racing Post senior writer Lee Mottershead to discuss the latest from around the racing world. With favourite Jan Brueghel controversially scratched from the Melbourne Cup on the order of RV vets and stewards, Nick and Lee examine the reasons for the scratch with Kick Up for Racing's Vicky Leonard, after hearing Aidan O'Brien's succinct but unvarnished thoughts on the matter. Later in this episode, hear more from Aidan, as he discusses City of Troy's Classic bid, while we also hear from Ramiro Restrepo, owner of Juvenile fancy Ferocious, Keeneland's Cormac Breathnach on the inaugural eve-of-Cup sale, and JA McGrath with news of David Eustace's rapid rise in Hong Kong. Would definitely be interested to hear from them and those guys getting heard by American racing’s leadership, including Mr. Janney, and the sport’s/game’s movers and shakers, including Mike Repole.
