Girl, Take the Lead!

Each week we explore Womanhood and Leadership with the goal to question the status quo and challenge our thinking so we celebrate every woman as a leader. Our episodes will interview leaders in the field, meet authors, explore books on the subject, hear inspiring stories, or talk with organizations leading the charge for women to lead. We’ll look at the different topics from different generational perspectives as my daughters, a Millennial and a Gen Z, will join me, a Boomer, from time to time. We hope to make you laugh and leave inspired as you hear our voices on this very important topic.

Ep 213. Understanding Crisis, Trauma, Healing, and Growth with Dr. Kate Flynn, The Crisis Coach

Kate Flynn, Millennial, is The Crisis Coach with a PhD in Developmental Psychology. After navigating her own life-altering crisis, Kate combined her academic expertise, entrepreneurial success, and personal resilience to create a unique coaching practice. She specializes in helping high-achieving leaders turn their most challenging moments into opportunities for growth and transformation. Topics Covered:     Post Traumatic Growth        Defining Crisis and Trauma·         The Body Keeps the Score    Trauma statistics & symptoms        EMDR benefits     IFS (Internal Family System)      Healing & different options   3 Episode Takeaways 1. Post Traumatic Growth is an individual’s ability to grow and transform following major struggles but continue to grow and transform – “what doesn’t kill you can make you stronger” with a properly set table. Resilience is one’s ability to bounce back to baseline after something challenging happens. 2. Crisis is the external experience and there are two types: with a “C” easily identifiable and requires immediate action, and those with a “c” that are slow burning, less identifiable, and can sometimes trigger bigger feelings. Trauma is our internal experience and lives in our bodies - they can cause crisis situations or over-react to situations. Crisis and trauma can be intertwined. 3. Based on the statistics from the book The Body Keeps The Score there are many of us walking around with unresolved trauma and may not know it. EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) is one powerful way to “unearth” what’s going on in our bodies to help identify the triggers to unearth traumas to work through the experiences to get closure. 211. The Universe Within: Aligning Resolutions, Goals, Intentions, and Joy

A Statista Consumer Insights survey of 1,050 U.S. residents revealed that the top response regarding resolutions for 2025 was surprising: 4 in 10 respondents stated they do not plan to make any resolutions for the upcoming year. Why might that be? It’s not too surprising, considering that research shows only 9-12% of people actually keep their New Year’s resolutions. So what does work? A 2022 study found that setting daily intentions improved focus and emotional regulation in 73% of participants. With that in mind, this episode will explore why resolutions often fall short—and how they differ from goals and intentions.   Plus we’ll look into Gabby Bernstein’s book, The Universe Has You Back, to understand how fear can also get in the way of achieving our dreams even with the perfect plan. The 3 Episode Takeaways: 1.   Goals provide structure, resolutions inspire change, and intentions ground us in trust and purpose. Together, they form a balanced and holistic approach to personal growth. 2.   Gabby Bernstein’s wisdom: “When we release fear and align with love, our intentions effortlessly manifest into reality.” 3.   Gabby’s insight: Joy is our birthright, but we block it when we separate ourselves from love. We do this by giving purpose to pain, seeking power outside ourselves, and placing our faith in fear instead of love. Reconnecting with love restores our joy and aligns us with the Universe.   Resources The Universe Has Your Back: Transform Fear to Faith by Gabrielle Bernstein https://amazon.com   Ep. 51, Intentions v Resolutions with help from Jay Shetty’s book: Think Like a Monk, Train Your Mind for Peace and Purpose Every Day https://spotifycreators-web.app.link/e/J1jN4NfHsPb   Ep. 70, Let’s Keep Digging into Habits with Atomic Habits by James Clear https://spotifycreators-web.app.link/e/WLNs0ZtnLPb   Ep. 163, Rethinking Grit: Embracing Quit with Nicole Trick Steinbach https://spotifycreators-web.app.link/e/l5UwfrsnLPb "Why Setting Intentions is More Effective Than Resolutions" - Psychology Today https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/a-different-lens/202212/better-than-a-resolution-try-a-new-years-intention “America’s most popular New Year’s resolutions for 2025” https://www.ajc.com/things-to-do/most-popular-new-years-resolutions-for-2025-in-us/WQ55E76N3NCG5ENB5ARKGE7EQA/#:~:text=According%20to%20YouGov%2C%20an%20international,the%20top%20resolution%20among%20respondents. 210. Remembering Jimmy Carter: A Legacy of Peace, Music, and Leadership

With the news of President Jimmy Carter’s passing, I felt it was important to pause and reflect on the legacy of this extraordinary man. To honor him, I’m replaying an episode I did in October of this year dedicated to his life and contributions. Melinda French Gates beautifully captured his essence when she said: “One of my favorite teachings says: ‘To know that even one life has breathed easier because you lived, this is to have succeeded.’ We honor President Carter by remembering that because of him, life is healthier, better, and safer—not just for one life, but for millions.” President Carter’s legacy goes far beyond his time in the White House. His humanitarian work, unwavering commitment to peace, and dedication to uplifting others have inspired generations. On a personal note, I’ve always thought of him as the Rock ‘n Roll President—a leader with a rhythm and authenticity all his own. As we remember him today, let’s celebrate the compassion, humility, and humanity he brought to the world. I hope this replay reminds us of how one person’s courage and kindness can ripple across millions of lives.   Topics Covered: President Carter’s key accomplishments in and out of office Why Jimmy Carter is the Rock ‘n Roll President Carter’s friendship with musicians A marketing innovator when it came to campaign events His quotes about leadership Here are 3 takeaways from our episode:   1. Jimmy Carter certainly deserves to be called the Rock ‘n Roll president. He saw music as the one thing we all have in common no matter where live.   2. Jimmy inspires us to have faith, do what we believe to be right, no matter how much others may see as ‘inappropriate’.   3. While some will not look kindly on his time as President, he is an inspiring, decent human being. Thank you, Mr. President, for all you have done. I am grieving our loss. 207. Building Meaningful Friendships: Overcoming Loneliness and Finding Joy with Ziem Nguyen Neubert

Ziem Nguyen Neubert, Executive Director of Project Cornerstone at the YMCA of Silicon Valley, joins us to discuss the topic of loneliness. Ziem leads an amazing team, working with school and community partners to support youth social and emotional well-being. Over 20 years of experience in education – serving as a teacher, coordinator, assistant principal, and principal – has been instrumental in supporting her work in building relationships and driving the vision for Project Cornerstone. Ziem is passionate about fostering positive skills, relationships, experiences, and honest conversations to create safe, caring, and equitable communities in Silicon Valley and beyond. Today, Project Cornerstone works with over 180 schools, reaching 62,000 students annually with the help of over 4,000 volunteers. Topics Covered:     Loneliness defined Social media connectedness and loneliness Misconceptions around loneliness Friendships and different kinds of connections 3 ways we take care of ourselves: assess, plan, act   3     Episode Takeaways   1.   We may not want to get rid of loneliness – if we never experience sadness how will we experience joy? It’s also a way to kick ourselves into gear and take some action when we notice it. It’s chronic loneliness we need to watch for.   2.   Social media isn’t all bad but may not be as meaningful to us as a way to connect with others. It’s the choices we make. While the social tools can assist us in connecting and be convenient/fast, we have the choice to connect this way or pick up the phone or make a plan to visit someone. 3.   There are a number of misconceptions around loneliness: like quantity matters, to feel lonely isn’t normal, we should feel shameful if we get lonely, loneliness only happens to “old” people, and introverts are lonelier than extroverts (we all need along alone time to recharge). Friendship is a key way to address loneliness but it’s good to assess, plan, and take action when choosing friends.   Ziem’s Resources The BIG document – report: “Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation – The U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory on the Healing Effects of Social Connection and Community”       https://www.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/surgeon-general-social-connection-advisory.pdf   “US surgeon general Vivek Murthy: ‘Loneliness is like hunger, a signal we’re lacking something for survival’” (January 29, 2024) https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2024/jan/29/us-surgeon-general-vivek-murthy-loneliness-mental-health-epidemic-social-media   “New Surgeon General Advisory Raises Alarm about the Devastating Impact of the Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation in the United States” (May 3, 2023)      https://www.hhs.gov/about/news/2023/05/03/new-surgeon-general-advisory-raises-alarm-about-devastating-impact-epidemic-loneliness-isolation-united-states.html “Loneliness Among Teens Has Increased Over the Years Violence, depression, and radicalization realities are telling.” (May 30, 2022)    https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/cultural-neuroscience/202205/loneliness-among-teens-has-increased-over-the-years   Card or Gift Items Ziem Liked from Our Store https://girltaketheleadpod.com/shop       Lotus Heart with the sentiment: “I carry your heart with me – I carry it in my heart”  e.e. cummings.     How to reach Ziem:   LinkedIn account: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ziem-neubert/ eMail: ziem@projectcornerstone.org Website: www.projectcornerstone.org You can make a donation there.
