Vic Morren: Born in New York City close to the Old Madison Square Garden, Vic Morren has had hockey in his blood his entire life as a fan, player and television production manager. A graduate of William Paterson University, Morren skated for three seasons with the Pioneers hockey club and became the first statistical analyst to apply his craft to telecasts working New York Islanders and New Jersey Devils games from 1984-87. He co-authored two NHL-based statistics books within that span before moving to ESPN in 1987 and working the final season of the original deal the network had with the NHL. After departing in 1990, Morren worked as a studio producer for SportsChannel America’s NHL coverage and the 1992 Barcelona Olympics before returning to ESPN that fall where he worked all 12 seasons on the second ESPN/NHL deal and the first season of the most recent contract in 2021-22. Morren has also earned a Sports Emmy for his work on Sunday Night Football coverage in 2003. His relationship with Neil Smith dates back 33 years through their mutual friendship with the late ESPN/ABC commentator John Saunders. Episode 50 - Buckle Up for the Trade Deadline with TSN's Chris Johnston

One of most anticipated weeks of the NHL season is upon us with the trade deadline approaching. Chris Johnston from TSN and The Athletic join Neil and Vic to talk trades that have happened and a look ahead to those looking to fill those missing final pieces to make a title run. Other in-show discussions address differences in handling adversity during a season, the generational players in the 2000's and 2010's and plays that have reflected forgettable seasons in Pittsburgh and Nashville. [00:59] - Two injuries headline "Three Things You Need to Pay Attention To" in addition to the Columbus Blue Jackets Memorable outdoor win Saturday. [05:47] - Chris Johnston joins the show with his take on the Seth Jones trade from Chicago to Florida as well as what the defending Stanley Cup champs might do with cap space with Matthew Tkachuk headed to LTIR. [14:18] - Analysis of the Rangers-Avalanche deal with Ryan Lindgren and Jimmy Vesey heading to Denver. [17:09] - Gustav Nyquist joins the Minnesota Wild for the second time in three years, coming over from Nashville. [19:34] - Still without a contract for 2025-26, the Carolina Hurricanes must decide whether to move recently acquired sniper Mikko Rantanen or roll the dice, keep him and risk losing him for nothing on July 1. [23:00] - After a record-setting season two years ago, the Boston Bruins are at a crosswords with captain Brad Marchand as an impending UFA. [26:58] - Chris speaks about what certain contenders will try to do in order to ensure a strong playoff run. [34:15] - Hitting singles vs. home runs at the deadline. [38:51] - Adversity: All teams deal with it but it comes in very different forms. Case studies are Columbus and Washington. [41:41] - The generational players of the 2000's are having a better time of it in recent weeks than the generational players of the 2010's. [44:47] - If anything summed up the seasons of the Penguins and Predators, you saw it this past weekend. [48:45] - Player Notes [51:04] - The Human Side of the Story focuses on Neil's experiences of how the trade deadline has changed, the need to detach from emotions when player upheaval is involved and the feelings of a GM once the deadline has passed.
