Episode 10: How Do Children Experience Grief?

Kids are Philanthropists, Too!

Summary: Curious about what kids are deeply concerned about? We kick off our 2nd season of Kids are Philanthropists, Too!, with two episodes about grief, the most pressing concern amongst 3-5th grade participants in our programs in 2023.

Our special guest is Gilly Cannon, Senior Director of Children's Bereavement Services at Caring Matters, one of the top non-profit organizations chosen by kids to receive $1,000 grants this season. Robertas House was another.

Our hosts: Season 2 is hosted by Amy Neugebauer, Executive Director of The Giving Square. along with 12-13 year old returning hosts (Jayden, Alona, Leo, Ismahil, Ibrahim, Sam) and our new 9-11 year hosts (Rita, Aoife, and Jo).

Want to engage more about the topic of grief with kids? The Giving Square suggests these books (recommended by the Children and Teens team at Politics and Prose) as starting points for kids (and former kids!) of all ages:

  • Jenny Mei is Sad by Tracy Subisak
  • The Tenth Good Thing About Barney by Judith Viorst

The series: "Kids are Philanthropists, Too!" demonstrates that we can all come together and talk about personal, complicated things, no matter our age. Like the podcast? Spread the word! Get involved, follow and support The Giving Square.

Special thanks to Dave Schatz for contributing his production skills and to our special Season 2 Sponsor, Squiggle Drop. Check out this great and challenging game for all ages on Apple Arcade.
