Episode 119: Michael Angelakis
This week we are joined by Michael Angelakis, one of the biggest names in the South Australian seafood industry. We hear the story of how the Angelakis family arrived in Australia from the Greek Islands in the 1920s and went from fishing on the Eyre Peninsula for Whiting to running a booming SA business employing 150 people. Michael tells us about his own journey including his time in business, his hugely successful TV program ‘Out of The Blue’ with Michael Keelan and how he is now enjoying his time as a recreational angler. We also chat about his favourite SA seafood dish, how he sees the management of fishing in SA and how he loves to cook plenty of the less sought after species,
We also have all of the latest news in SA fishing, including:
- Crayfish season is now open in the South East of the state, but unfortunately the export ban to China continues into a fourth year.
- RecFish SA clinics are up and running with a kids and womens clinic in Lake Bonney on October 18 and 19 and another kids clinic at West Lakes on October 13 - Gone Fishing Day!
- Kingfish netting is continuing and underpriced fish are now popping up for sale.
- Safe Boating week is coming up and is a timely reminder to make sure you are set up for Summer.
Our tackle item of the week is the Salty Captain range which we recently purchased to keep our boat in top condition over Summer. We have organised a discount code for all of our listeners, use the code ALLTHEGEAR15 to get 15% of your online orders.
Jordan Saliba is the September photo competition winner thanks to his epic photos of cleaning up on Squid and King George Whiting in his kayak recently. We also update the fishing report including a barrel Tuna update, The Fishing Guru cleaning up on the Callop and a preview of the Northbank Fishing Competition being held at Wallaroo this weekend!
