Senryu is a type of traditional Japanese poetry originating in the Edo Period, made up of three lines of five, seven and five syllables respectively. Every year, Japanese life insurance company Dai-ichi runs a poetry contest, encouraging Japanese salarymen to submit their often humorous and satirical poems. In 2021, the competition attracted 60,000 submissions, many of which inspired by the change in work circumstances due to the coronavirus.
