Episode 25-2: The Effort of Elite Performance - Athlete Management & the NBA

In Sport, balancing training, practice and rest and recovery has quickly become one of the most powerful tools in maximizing sport performance. Day to day, week to week, month by month micro and macro programming has changed how we manage our athletes. However, at the developmental and youth levels of sport the concept of “Athlete Management’ is greatly non-existent. With Great intentions we train year-round and pack the weekly schedule with all kinds of activity – could it be holding you back or even worse setting you up for failure? This week on Krush Performance we talk with Ed Subel, Associate Head Strength and Conditioning for the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers. The NBA is on the forefront of athlete and player management and the league itself has made strategic changes to the schedule to help players avoid fatigue and ultimately injury. We talk with Ed about his approach to working with the world’s best Basketball players, Effort is a big piece of the puzzle and we look at how we can apply this to players at every level of the game. Focusing on effort and collaborating with your athletes in their programming is a BIG part of the process when you are Creating Coachable Players. Episode 18-11: Valuing Talent in Sport

Sport is a commodities market and the #1 commodity in sport is Talent! Its like the Wild West, Guns for Hire and its BIG BUSINESS. You’ve probably hears all about it: The Largest Deal In Professional Sport History. Juan Soto, $765 Million over 15 years. With signing bonus and incentives, he will earn close to $840,000,000 by the time its all done. Soto is obviously a HOT commodity but how do you value Talent? It’s a numbers game. A players performance numbers compared to all other players, it’s a market value system. Its Cut and Dry, Black and White and it is Absolutely Unforgiving. Either you have the numbers, or you do not. However, what do you do as a young player with a dream of playing in the big leagues? Or as a parent of an athlete who has that dream? Or as a coach of a driven passionate kid who loves sport. My best advice, for what its worth, is to get an understanding of the long game that is athlete development and read up on Talent. This can really help you guide your athlete through the process and at the same time give you some great knowledge that you can use to make informed decisions. That is exactly what we are going to do on this week’s episode of Krush Performance as we sum up all of our work looking into Talent and Talent ID. Soto’s contract with bonuses and clauses can add up to more than $840 million over the15 years – he’ll be 41. Its Great Work if you can get it and there is nothing like the thrill of the chase when you are creating coachable players. Episode 18-10: Shut Down: Maximizing Your Off-Season

One of the most important questions in sport today, What to do over your off season? The off season for me is one of the most important periods in an athlete’s annual plan. This is where you train the athlete to be a more coachable player. Annual Planning, it’s a cycle of Athlete & Player management that can be broken down into 4 phases: · Off season · Pre-Season · In-Season · Post-Season Remember all programmed work MUST be built around our #1 Priority for program planning, Rest & Recovery. And when it comes to an athlete’s daily performance, Sleep Rules all!!!! When you are planning an athlete’s workload & recovery there are 4 factors you need to consider: · Volume – the how much · Intensity – the how hard · Frequency – the how often · Movement Efficiency – the how much stress/damage Bottom line, take advantage of any downtime you can get! As you head into your off-season ask yourself What is the benefit to year-round sport? It takes time to master a sport and there are no truer words than MORE IS NOT BETTER when you’re Creating Coachable Players Subscribe to the show on Apple Podcasts, TuneIn Radio, Google Podcast, the iHeartRadio app, and now on Spotify! Episode 18-9: Culture Trumps Strategy Every Time

Today, you can probably pick out the organizations with great cultures with great accuracy: Kansas City Chiefs – The LA Dodgers – Vegas Knights -Celtics Or Top Schools: Stanford, Penn State, University of California Storied football Franchises: Liverpool, Barcelona FC Real Madrid, Chelea They all have a Culture of Winning / Winning Cultures. Coming off of last weeks show with Kevin Tyler, President of Altis the conversation with our listeners surprised me. It was more about the environment and culture that Kevin and Altis has created and not so much the details that make up a performance program. The talk was about the big picture of when an athlete or coach step into an environment like this – only good things can happen, and I really thought this takeaway was interesting. There is no question, the idea of “culture” has been a focus in sport for a long, long time. On this week’s Episode of Krush Performance we go back into our 2022 Theme: Organizational and Team Performance with my conversation with Joan Ryan, acclaimed journalist and author of 5 books, including “Intangibles: Unlocking the Science and Soul of Team Chemistry.” Get set as we work to crack the code on organizational and team performance and the elusive concept of “Team Culture” is a perfect place to start. “Culture Trumps Strategy Every Time.” Harvard Business Review The Environment and Culture you create for your players is one of the most important things you can do when you are Creating Coachable Players. Episode 18-8: Attacking Performance: The Lifespan of the Athlete

Every athlete experiences doubt at some point. · Doubt about whether they are playing as well as they could be playing or · Whether they are progressing as fast as they feel they should be or · Whether they are going to be good enough to achieve their goals and objectives. The Good News – if you are or have experienced doubt you are not alone. Even Better News – you can make doubt work to your advantage if you fame it up correctly. Doubt is a natural part of the athlete and player development process and if you can learn to embrace it, it can be a very helpful tool. Doubt can be an indicator that it might be time to take a step back and evaluate where you are at, what you have been doing and how you have been planning in relation to your goals and objectives. In the process of athlete and player development we spend the majority of an athlete’s lifespan preparing for a few years of elite – top performance. Years and years building the foundation that will eventually support performance outcomes at the highest levels of performance. Unfortunately, most athletes, coaches, parents underestimate the demands at the highest levels of sport. And in turn, do not fully appreciate the importance of the building phases of development that must happen to support elite performance. This week on Krush Performance we discuss that process and the importance of coaching development as we breakdown the lifespan of an athlete and everything that goes into creating top performance with Kevin Tyler, President of Altis.
