Reflections on the Book of Acts

The book of Acts gives a good narrative on the three main things which God has been speaking to LifeLine Church about in recent times: Sharper witness: this is about our clearer presentation of the gospel message – revealing our source of power to remain relevant Households together: With Christ at the centre; comprised of individuals and families where love is expressed and new people quickly belong Ministering the Spirit: Naturally operating in supernatural gifts which strengthen the church and awaken a hunger in others

  1. ÉPISODE 1

Episode 1: Introduction to the book of Acts

This is the first episode in a new series where we will be looking at the book of Acts. Today’s episode explores how we get from Kings (the book we focused on in our previous series) to Acts, and what went on between the two books. We also explore why and when Acts was written, who it was written by, and who the main characters are. Acts is often commonly referred to as ‘Acts of the Apostles’, however, it could be more argued that a more appropriate title would be ‘Acts of the Holy Spirit’, as the Holy Spirit is the one constant character throughout the story. This podcast is part of a series on the books of Acts which is supported by periodic ‘reflections’, which consider questions which have been submitted by members of LifeLine Church. 2. ÉPISODE 2

    Episode 2: Acts 1

Chapter 1 in the books of Acts sees Jesus spending 40 days with his disciples before ascending to Heaven. It can be read as a continuation from Luke 24, and is key for Jesus giving instruction to his disciples on the next steps, with the primary and most important step being to wait for the impartation of the Holy Spirit. 3. ÉPISODE 4

    Episode 4: Acts 2 42-47

Learning to love one another can’t be programmed, or sustained through common interests. We can’t possibly love others out of our own resources! We have to rely on God, committing to His way by asking Him to cause us to love Him and therefore others more. 4. ÉPISODE 5

    Episode 5: Acts 3

God is in the business of releasing people! Just as in this passage, He released the man who had been lame since birth. It’s good to ask ourselves whether we’re trapped or crippled in some way. Do we expect anything different? Could we expect God to do a miracle and release us in some way? Later in the passage, after this amazing miracle, Peter goes into overdrive and tells the crowd exactly what they’re culpable for before God. They must have felt very uncomfortable and angry! It certainly wouldn’t have won Peter any popularity contest. He must have felt prompted by God to say what he did, and his focus was obedience to His father, rather than popularity. Bringing their attention to their guilt gave Peter the opportunity to show God’s way out too. We can plead ignorance or lack of intention in our actions, but we can still hurt others. God’s answer? Repent then! And turn to God so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord… Repentance is good news! 5. ÉPISODE 6

    Episode 6: Acts 4

This is the chapter where the rubber starts to hit the road, and we see how the Kingdom is advanced as Peter and John (unschooled, ordinary men) talk to people out of the overflow of having been filled with the Holy Spirit. They are very clear – the only way we can find salvation is through faith that Jesus died, bore the weight of humanities collective decision across the ages to rely on our own wisdom, rather than God’s, and then was raised back to life again by God. This single act in history has given each of us a way to restore our relationship with the living God, as we decide to stop living life according to our own wisdom and rules, and recognise that He is, was and always will be Lord – the God who SO loved us, that He came in human form as Jesus to show us what He’s like – and then paid the price of death in order to restore His original intention – relationship with us! As Peter says ‘“Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12 This podcast is part of a series on the books of Acts which is supported by periodic ‘reflections’, which consider questions which have been submitted by members of LifeLine Church. 6. ÉPISODE 7

    Episode 7: Acts 5

Acts 5: 1-11 The story of Ananais and Sapphira is one that shows us the seriousness of being real with God, and serving Him above all else. It’s tempting, with the limitations of our own wisdom and view, to look for approval and recognition from our peers, or people who we want to impress. So what’s the antidote? We find the answer in Psalm 139, 23-24: “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. [24] See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” This podcast is part of a series on the books of Acts which is supported by periodic ‘reflections’, which consider questions which have been submitted by members of LifeLine Church. 7. ÉPISODE 8

    Episode 8: Acts 5 cont…

Jamie draws out three key points from this passage in Acts:  Joined versus added… The chapter talks about people being added. We usually talk about joining a church as our choice. But what if there’s an alternative view – one where God chooses where He wants to add us to His body? Prison couldn’t hold them… No prison can hold God captive What made the apostles so heroic?
