Episode 33: One Tree Hill star Bethany Joy Lenz on joining a Hollywood cult

Bethany Joy Lenz rose to fame as one of the main stars of the hit TV series "One Tree Hill," a show that became an iconic part of television history. In addition to her role as Haley James Scott on "One Tree Hill," Joy has also been featured in a bunch of other popular shows. This includes "Dexter," "CSI," and "Grey’s Anatomy," in addition to "Agents of SHIELD”, which is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Shockingly, what many fans did not know is that during her entire tenure on "One Tree Hill," Joy was secretly involved in a cult. A few months ago, she went public with this experience in what is now a New York Times bestselling memoir, "Dinner for Vampires." So in this episode, we dive deep into that experience. We explore the early days of her involvement with the cult, how it gradually took control of every aspect of her life, and why there were so many challenges in breaking free. We learn about the cult slowly alienated from her family, coerced her into marrying the cult leader’s son, and eventually stole $2 million dollars from her. Episode 32: Harvard neuroscientist on loneliness, connection & friendship

Dr. Matthew Lieberman is a neuroscientist who originally trained (and taught) at Harvard. He is recognized as one of the foremost authorities in the world when it comes to social connection. He later went on to publish the bestselling book Social, which revealed that our need to connect with other people is more fundamental than even shelter or food. Currently, Lieberman runs a lab at UCLA that tackles the loneliness epidemic by running experiments that aim to turn acquaintances into friendships. The importance of this episode cannot be understated, as it’s estimated that at least 50% of the population experiences loneliness and many people don’t feel they have even one other person they can confide in. It’s been famously documented that the negative effects from loneliness are like smoking 15 cigarettes a day. So in this episode, we explore the cause of the loneliness epidemic and what we can do about it. We explore some of the fascinating discoveries in the fields of neuroscience and social psychology, and the practical outcomes for what they mean for your social life. But most of all, we get to the root of how we can develop rich and meaningful friendships. Chapters: 0:00 - Intro 1:20 - Loneliness is worse than smoking? 7:28 - Introverts vs. extroverts 14:01 - Do men need to talk about feelings? 21:04 - The importance of attachment in connection 28:12 - Science has revealed THIS about the brain? 42:23 - Humans value complements over money? 47:50 - How has the modern world affected connection? 54:22 - The three buckets of friendships 59:37 - Humans weren’t meant to have endless choices 1:03:02 - Getting “in-sync” with another person 1:13:13 - What activities promote connection with others? 1:19:14 - The problem of differing belief systems 1:26:56 - Why do two humans see the same thing differently? 1:36:15 - What’s the maximum amount of connections we can have? 1:38:41 - How to develop new connections & friends 1:43:17 - Handling rejection 1:46:02 - Helping & connecting with others gives us meaning Follow Matthew on social: Twitter / X: https://x.com/social_brains Buy Social: https://shorturl.at/C01A5 Mighty Pursuit Links: Website: https://www.mightypursuit.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mightypursuit/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mightypursuit/ X: https://x.com/MightyPursuit For business inquiries: hello@mightypursuit.com

Episode 31: UFC star Miesha Tate on success, winning & happiness

Miesha is one of the most accomplished fighters in UFC history, and a pioneer in the women’s division. The height of her success came in 2016, when she won the Bantamweight Championship, which is the most prestigious women's MMA title in the world. But just four months later, she lost the title. And within that calendar year, she abruptly retired due to the mental exhaustion of winning and losing. Miesha’s story is a cautionary tale, because no matter what career or endeavor we’re pursuing, many of us see success as the key to our happiness. We do this without realizing that success acts like a double-edged sword. When we have an unhealthy fixation on success, it can actually lead to an emotional downfall. In this episode, we explore the tension between pursuing a goal, and then caving to the temptation to put your self-worth in your accomplishments. We unpack the unbelievable feeling that comes with winning, and the despair that comes with losing. We’ll get a behind-the-scenes look into Miesha’s highly publicized rivalry with Ronda Rousey, and how comparison and competition can often fuel an unhealthy obsession with success. Finally, we’ll explore what Miesha learned in recent years that helped her break free from this cycle. We’ll learn how to define success, and how there are actually many components that make up a truly happy and successful life. 4. Episode 30: Alex O'Connor & Dr. Francis Collins debate God's existence

    12/12/2024

Episode 30: Alex O'Connor & Dr. Francis Collins debate God's existence

“Does God Exist?” Is perhaps the most important question to human existence because of its far reaching implications. What you believe about the existence of God—and by extension, who or what God might be—has the power to profoundly influence your values, and the course of your life. To explore this question from opposing perspectives, we’ve brought together two intellectual heavyweights. Alex O’Connor is an Oxford philosopher and self-proclaimed atheist, who has described himself as 'violently agnostic' about the existence of God. In recent years, he’s gained substantial recognition in the academic world and beyond, with nearly a million YouTube subscribers. His show, Within Reason, has featured intellectual giants like Jordan Peterson, Richard Dawkins, William Lane Craig, and Sam Harris. On the other side, we have Dr. Francis Collins—one of the most distinguished scientists of our time. From 1993 to 2003, he led the Human Genome Project, the monumental effort to map all human genes. Dr. Collins is perhaps the most notable scientist to transition from atheism to belief in God, famously chronicling his journey in the New York Times bestseller, The Language of God. In it, he presents compelling arguments for the existence of a higher power. In this episode, we explore the various lines of evidence for and against the existence of God. We begin by defining the concept of 'evidence' itself before delving into topics such as the fine-tuning of the universe, the moral argument, the resurrection of Jesus and the world's holy texts. We found this to be a deeply stimulating discussion, and we believe it will be for you as well. So, join us as we navigate the complexities, the debates, and the profound mysteries surrounding the existence of God. Chapters: 0:00 - Intro + Trailer 4:19 - Alex’s position 8:20 - Francis’s position 12:07 - What counts as “evidence” for God? 22:15 - The Fine Tuning Argument 42:23 - The Problem of Evil 59:29 - The Resurrection of Jesus 1:23:35 - Can God be experienced? 1:25:42 - God spoke to Francis? 1:33:22 - Beauty & music reveal God? 1:43:38 - Why does this question matter? 5. Episode 29: Dr. Francis Collins on God, atheism, science & belief

    12/05/2024

Episode 29: Dr. Francis Collins on God, atheism, science & belief

Dr. Francis Collins is one of the most decorated scientists of all-time, and one of the smartest people around the globe. His accolades speak for themselves. From 1993 to 2003, he oversaw the Human Genome Project, an international research effort to map and understand all the genes of the human species, collectively known as the genome. Completed in 2003, this project provided a blueprint for human biology, helping scientists understand how genes influence health and disease. Many view it one of the most important scientific achievements in all of history. But Francis is not just a decorated scientist, he is also famously known for his journey from atheism to becoming a believer in God. In 2006, he released the international New York Times bestseller, The Language of God, in which he put forth all the different lines of evidence for God's existence. So in this episode, we attempt to answer some very big questions. We examine if science and religion are really at odds, why it seems like some scientists are resistant to believing in God, and if science is the only way to know if something is factually true. We take a deeper look into the concept of truth itself, and the difference between objective truth and subjective truth. Ultimately, we think that this episode will help you make sense of some really big questions, and develop a stronger foundation for your own belief system. Chapters 0:00 - Intro 2:30 - The Human Genome Project 6:49 - Are most scientists atheists? 10:38 - Why is science a great predictor of fact? 15:09 - Objective truth vs. subjective truth 22:28 - Developing a theory of everything 25:44 - Is science the only way to find truth? 30:10 - How do we know who to trust? 36:23 - Science vs. scientism 37:56 - Why is contemplating God important? 39:48 - What convinced Francis that God exists 45:39 - The harmony of science & spirituality 1:00:42 - Why Francis chose Christianity over other religions Buy The Road to Wisdom: https://shorturl.at/lFLO0 Mighty Pursuit Links: Website: https://www.mightypursuit.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mightypursuit/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mightypursuit/ X: https://x.com/MightyPursuit For business inquiries: hello@mightypursuit.com

  8. Episode 26: Three gay men debate sexuality

    10/31/2024

Episode 26: Three gay men debate sexuality

Few things have marked our culture in recent years as much as the dialogue around sexuality. It’s clear that a percentage of the population has certainly found liberation in the gay movement. This movement was originally born out of deep pain. At one time, it was dangerous to be out and gay in the United States. So there is no doubt that we’ve created a safer world for gay people to exist, at least in the West. But despite the progress that has been made, really big questions remain. Many LGBTQ+ individuals struggle to reconcile their sexuality with their spirituality due to the historical religious stigma surrounding this subject. Beyond that, there are big questions around the LGBTQ movement itself and what it truly stands for. Many people have questions about gay representation in the media, gay rights and even what it means to be gay. So the conversation you’re about to hear is informed entirely by social listening. We’ve taken all the biggest talking points from the left, the right, and the middle – everywhere across the political, religious and ideological spectrum – and fused them into one episode. Intentionally, all three panelists come from three wildly different backgrounds. Each guest has a different flavor of what they believe about sexuality, and also spirituality. Tony Morrison is one of the executives at GLAAD, the largest gay and lesbian organization in the world. Previously, he was a producer at Good Morning America, and Disney, becoming a 3x Emmy award winner. He identifies as non-religious and he also announced he has HIV a few years ago. Jonathan Merritt has been one of the most prolific writers at the Atlantic over the last 10 years, and has also written multiple books. He identifies as a Christian, and is looking to get married. Lastly, Dr. David Bennett is a theologian (and former atheist) who spent the better part of the last five years getting his doctorate in biblical studies. He is a Christian, he identifies as gay, and has chosen to be celibate based on his biblical convictions. In this episode, we dive into their personal stories, and also ask some very hard hitting questions. On the spiritual front, we discuss why religious folks have told gay people that God hates them, and examine some of the most confusing passages in books like the Bible. On the cultural front, we discuss gay rights, the claim that gay is becoming trendy, and what it even means to be gay. We also discuss the controversy over gay representation in the media and if the wealth of content and behavior we see on social media is representative of every gay person. Finally, we unpack what it means to love through difference. Chapters: 0:00 - Trailer 1:58 - Intro 7:17 - Tony’s story 11:13 - David’s story 24:46 - Jonathan’s story 33:03 - Why Tony rejected the church 41:54 - Why have gay people historically been mistreated? 49:33 - Is the Bible a problem for gay people? 1:23:23 - On the topic of gay rights 1:31:04 - Why was gay marriage such a huge deal? 1:44:20 - Should we accept all viewpoints? 1:50:09 - Why has sexuality become so fluid? 2:02:18 - Can straight people enjoy gay sex (and vice-versa)? 2:17:33 - What does the term “gay” mean? 2:27:32 - Addressing behavior at pride parades 2:33:09 - Disney & the “not-so-secret gay agenda” 2:39:56 - Has being gay become “trendy”? 2:44:32 - How do we love through difference? 2:50:51 - Can you love someone and not accept a part of them? 2:59:54 - Triggering language for gay people Follow the panel on social media: Jonathan Merritt: https://www.instagram.com/jonathan_merritt/?hl=en David Bennett: https://www.instagram.com/davidacbennett/?hl=en Tony Morrison: https://www.instagram.com/thetonymorrison/?hl=en Mighty Pursuit Links: Website: https://www.mightypursuit.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mightypursuit/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mightypursuit/ X: https://x.com/MightyPursuit For business inquiries: hello@mightypursuit.com
