De-Classy-Fied

I am personally a whimp, so I have to pick and choose what I listen to. Ha! But I find the topics so unique and interesting and always learn something cool. From Panama Papers to local mysteries and cults. Great podcast!

I went into my first episode of this podcast expecting another “Wikipedia with Jokes” format. You know what I’m talking about - the kind of show where the hosts seek out bizarre people, places, or things and spend 60-90 minutes mocking the subject matter like cultural poverty tourists. THIS IS NOT ONE OF THOSE SHOWS. The ladies of Declassyfied approach their discussion topics, which range from cults to extraterrestrials (sometimes both at the same time) with respect, intellectual curiosity, and *gasp* empathy. For example, in one segment about an infamous cult that promoted bulimia and anorexia as a means to control its followers, the presenter tied it back to her own struggles with food and empathized with the cult members who were all just looking for “ways to deal with life.” In another segment, the presenter noted how the Heaven’s Gate cult was ahead of its time in many culturally significant ways, including being on the forefront of web design and predicting the post 9/11 surveillance state we are currently living in. To be clear, the presenters are not apologists for cults or supporting the actions of insane narcissists. They are simply approaching their topics with respect and dignity, and attempting to see the humanity in, well, humanity. More please!
