Episode 80: Yes, You Can Look Great on Zoom Calls: Tips and Tricks with Marsha Redmon

This week on the High Wire Woman podcast, Rosanna Berardi is letting listeners know the tips and tricks to looking good on Zoom. Her guest is Marsha Redmon, a communications expert and CEO of LexTrack Directories Software. Marsha works with lawyers and executives on communication, business development training, and marketing. In this week’s episode, Marsha shares her story, and insights for High Wire Women on improving their virtual presence.  You’ll hear Rosanna and Marsha talk about: The most important thing about virtual presence and communication is that you need to be good at it, Marsha claims. She firmly believes that the workplace will never go back to being 100% in-person, so it’s necessary for people to master their skills in virtual communication going forward. Looking into the camera makes your audience feel like they’re having a one-on-one conversation with you, which builds your relationship with them. Overhead lighting is ideal - underhead lighting casts shadows around your face and makes you look old. Furthermore, it’s better to have light shining toward your face rather than behind you; the latter shrouds your face in darkness, and your audience will be unable to read your expressions. Sometimes, you don’t have a lot of options when it comes to places to have a virtual call in. In these cases, it’s best to try to minimize your audience’s view of your background as much as possible. You can also try unconventional places like a closet. Virtual backgrounds are, more often than not, more distracting than a messy one. Great lighting and a clean background are the most necessary components for a professional virtual presence.  Resources Rosanna Berardi | LinkedIn Rosanna Berardi | Berardi Immigration Law High Wire Woman Marsha Redmon | LinkedIn - Twitter Marsha Redmon | On the Web

Episode 78: Stop Counting Calories and Start Losing Weight with Amber Sandberg

This week on the High Wire Woman podcast, Rosanna Berardi is exploring healthy and sustainable weight loss. Her guest is Amber Sandberg, a certified weight loss coach. Amber is passionate about helping mothers lose weight - for the last time - by tuning into the body’s hunger and fullness without feeling deprived. She is also the host of the Mom Inspired Show podcast, where she creates lasting conversations among moms. In this week’s episode, Amber shares the challenges that prevent women from sustaining weight gain, and what High Wire Women can do to overcome them. You’ll hear Rosanna and Amber talk about: A major factor that influences someone’s ability to sustain weight gain is their mindset, Amber claims. Sometimes, your weight is a symptom of other things that are happening in your life. Women, in general, are prone to eating for comfort - hence the term ‘comfort food’ - because it’s easily available and an enjoyable way to unwind. Cutting certain foods out of your life completely may not necessarily help, but at the same time, there may be foods you should avoid due to the state of your health. Having a balanced diet is one of the best and safest ways to lose weight.  Amber recommends that listeners drink half their body weight in water each day. If this isn’t feasible, then drink 64 ounces. Applying the all-or-nothing mentality to weight loss hinders more than helps - people are so paralyzed by perfection that they would rather do nothing if they can’t achieve ‘plus’ work on the first try. Allowing yourself to do ‘B minus work’ gives you the grace to make mistakes while actually doing what you committed to do. Snacking during meals can sabotage your weight loss.  Resources Rosanna Berardi | LinkedIn Rosanna Berardi | Berardi Immigration Law High Wire Woman Amber Sandberg | LinkedIn Amber Sandberg | Mom Inspired Show

Episode 77: Women & Sleep: How to Really Get a Good Night’s Sleep with Soda Kuczkowski

This week on the High Wire Woman podcast, Rosanna Berardi is educating listeners about the importance of sufficient and quality sleep. Her guest is Soda Kuczkowski, a certified sleep coach. Soda is the founder of Start With Sleep, an organization that advocates for sleep health and provides resources for health professionals, school systems, and corporate wellness initiatives. In this week’s episode, Soda shares insights about the sleep challenges unique to women and how High Wire Women can push through them. You’ll hear Rosanna and Soda talk about: Women have a higher threshold for sleep deprivation due to the numerous roles they play, Soda says. Though they sleep more than their male counterparts, they are twice as likely to have issues like insomnia and sleep-related tiredness.  Exposure to natural light is important when you wake up in the morning. It’s the start cue to several physiological processes, including the production of serotonin. To improve the quality of your sleep, limit your exposure to artificial light from things like your phone and the TV after the sun sets. To manage your energy levels, you need to be able to understand your body. Soda recommends that listeners wear blue blocker glasses at night when using digital devices. It helps prevent overstimulation. Taking supplements isn’t a bad thing, but if you aren’t hydrating enough then you could be depriving your body of magnesium. Sleep affects all areas of your health, from physical to mental. It can be challenging, but there are many ways you can improve both your quality and quantity of sleep. Episode 75: Improve Your Sex Life: A Conversation with Dr. Lori Lawrenz

This week on the High Wire Woman podcast, Rosanna Berardi is talking about improving your sex life. Her guest, Dr. Lori Lawrenz, is a sex therapist who counsels women and helps them address issues of trauma, grief, shame, and mental health in regard to their sexuality. In this week’s episode, Dr. Lawrenz shares insights on improving your sexual health, increasing connections with your partner, and owning your sexuality.   You'll hear Rosanna and Lori talk about: Sex therapy is a way of engaging people in regard to their sexual health and is different from traditional talk therapy. Desire discrepancy is a frequent issue that comes up among couples. It is when you have desires different from your partner. Many partners feel shame because of this discrepancy. It's also easier for a person to simply cut off sexual interaction with their partner because of this shame.  Sensate focus is a recommended method for couples to engage in mutual non-sexual touch; it builds intimacy between both partners.  Emotionally focused therapy helps couples get down to the why of their reduced sexual desire. "A lot of times it's not about the what of the sexual relationship, it's about the why," Lori says. Talking out your feelings and doing deep introspection with your partner and the therapist can go a long way.  Sex, whether it's with a partner or it's solo, should be something to look forward to and something that's enjoyable. Sex therapy is important for many people, and they welcome the opportunity to talk about and get in touch with their sexuality. It also gives them the opportunity to talk about any past sexual traumas.  It's never too late to seek therapy, and it's never too late to heal from whatever has hurt you in the sexual sphere.  The more you can learn about yourself and your own sexuality, the more you can show up for somebody else. Your sexual health is just as important as your physical health. It's something precious, and something to be nurtured. Take care of it.  Resources Rosanna Berardi | LinkedIn Rosanna Berardi | Berardi Immigration Law High Wire Woman Dr. Lori Lawrenz Hawaii Center for Sexual and Relationship Health

Episode 74: How To Get Unstuck with Lia Garvin

This week on the High Wire Woman podcast, Rosanna Berardi is talking about improving your life. Her guest, Lia Garvin, is an author, a TEDX Speaker, and a leadership coach. Lia is also the Senior Team Operations & Inclusion Leader at Google. In this week’s episode, Lia shares insights on how to get out of the cycle of negative thoughts, how to get 'unstuck', and what you need to do to improve your life.   You'll hear Rosanna and Lia talk about: A place women can get stuck is when they're figuring out their next move. "I think a lot of times we feel like, 'Well I've been successful in this one area, and I've invested a lot of time', so it can feel like there's a sunk cost in pursuing another route," Lia says. What Lia suggests to her clients is to look at their passions, their strengths, and what makes them excited to go to work.   Many of your skills are transferable. When you get stuck, you may downplay your potential, but it's quite the opposite. "It's about reframing that story," Lia remarks.  Rosanna asks Lia what compelled her to write Unstuck. It was her way of culminating challenges she and other women were going through, and breaking free of them, she responds.  Feedback is important and needs to be acknowledged. Feedback breeds growth and keeps you from falling into dangerous behavioral traps and patterns.  There is magic in failure. Failure is where you learn. Women often shun failure because of the way society conditioned them, but failure is actually a good thing. "Differentiate between a failure which is something bigger we want to learn from than just a simple mistake," Lia says. Own up to failure, correct it, and it will allow you to self-reflect.  As managers, business owners, and entrepreneurs, you have to build psychological safety for people to share mistakes. You have to make it safe for people to fail, and help one another when they do.  Change your why questions to what questions. This will help you understand why you're feeling stuck and help you address the issue. Feeling stuck often feels like failure, but failure isn't catastrophic. Failure is where you learn and where you self-reflect.  Resources Rosanna Berardi | LinkedIn Rosanna Berardi | Berardi Immigration Law High Wire Woman Lia Garvin | LinkedIn | Instagram  Unstuck
