    Amadeus Flexes Its Range

    Amadeus, a global leader in hospitality technology, continues to expand its influence in the hotel sector across Australia and New Zealand. However, despite the rise of travel influencers and solo content creators in the tourism industry, the company is not directly working with this group to sell hotel packages. Nicole Dobson, Regional Vice President for Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific at Amadeus, clarified that their focus remains on collaborating with hotel properties of all sizes. “We don’t have a specific segment for solo travelers or influencers looking to market their own packages,” Dobson said. “But we work with a broad range of hotels, from those with just five rooms to large-scale properties with thousands of rooms, depending on their needs.” In terms of the hospitality market, Dobson pointed out that growth is uneven across the region. “Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide have seen strong demand in 2024, while Sydney and Melbourne have been slower to recover," she explained. New Zealand is experiencing a similar trend, with Queenstown thriving but other regions facing slower growth. Dobson also noted a return to seasonal booking trends after a period of unpredictability. "The winter months have had a clear impact on certain areas in both Australia and New Zealand, and we are seeing more typical seasonal booking patterns re-emerge," she said. When asked about the usability of Amadeus’ software, Dobson addressed past concerns that it was difficult to navigate. "We offer comprehensive training programs that start from implementation and go through the entire process of using the software. Our Amadeus Learning Hub allows users to train at their own pace, but we also provide hands-on or online training options,” she said. While some training is included with the software, additional services can be purchased. As the hospitality sector continues to face challenges and growth opportunities, Amadeus remains committed to supporting hotels of all sizes with technology solutions designed to streamline their operations.     Hotel Pricing Made Simple

    Room Price Genie, a hotel pricing optimization company, showcased its innovative platform at the No Vacancy Expo, held at the ICCC in Sydney last month. According to co-founder Marvin Speh, the company, which is based in Germany, helps hotels maximize revenue by setting optimal prices through data analysis and partnerships with PMS (Property Management Systems) or channel managers. "We help hotels find the right price to optimize revenue," explained Speh. The platform works by analyzing vast amounts of data and providing pricing recommendations to PMS or channel managers, who then distribute the new pricing across various booking channels. With 70% of its business in Europe, 15% in Australia and New Zealand, and another 15% in North America, Room Price Genie is still expanding, with plans to tap into Southeast Asia. "We’re starting with that now, but slowly," Speh said, adding that they don’t have a team on the ground in Southeast Asia yet but see it as a key future market. Room Price Genie works with hotels of all sizes, from small bed and breakfasts to larger groups with up to 100 properties. Their pricing model is subscription-based, with hotels paying a monthly fee for the service. Speh mentioned that recent analysis showed a 19% increase in revenue for hotels using their platform over the past year, with higher occupancy rates and increased average daily rates. The company entered the Australian market two and a half years ago, and it has been growing ever since. "We’re soon going to have over 10 people in the market," said Speh. Room Price Genie works with hotels and holiday parks across the country, focusing on smaller hotel chains and boutique accommodations. Although currently privately owned, the company aims to expand significantly before considering a public listing. "We need to 20-fold the business, and that’s going to take a few years," Speh said. Founded in 2017, the company's name, Room Price Genie, came from Speh’s co-founder’s wife, who thought it would be memorable — and it stuck. Choco Up Today Today, Choco Up has funded over 700 businesses with more than $150 million USD, offering financial support ranging from $10,000 to $1 million USD based on the businesses' revenue. The platform utilizes advanced algorithms and data analytics to streamline the funding process, providing quick and efficient financial solutions to businesses across Singapore, Australia, Malaysia, and Hong Kong. Percy and Brian's journey from e-commerce entrepreneurs to fintech innovators exemplifies the power of resilience, innovation, and strategic pivoting in the business world.     The Australian Federal Police (AFP) is highlighting a concerning uptick in reports of forced labour and exploitation within Australia, signaling an almost 50% increase over the past five years. As of the current period since 2018-19, a total of 178 incidents have been reported, shedding light on a disturbing trend affecting both domestic and overseas workers seeking employment in the nation. Forced labour, a severe form of human trafficking, involves coercing, threatening, or deceiving individuals to work against their will. Victims often face physical and psychological abuse, endure poor working conditions, and find themselves in debt bondage, believing they owe a significant debt to their employers. Australia, known as a migration corridor for temporary workers, particularly from the Asia-Pacific region, has seen migrant workers fall prey to exploitation due to factors like visa status, limited understanding of Australian worker rights, cultural barriers, and social isolation. AFP Commander Helen Schneider voiced concerns over criminals targeting vulnerable individuals for exploitation through deceptive recruitment methods. Recent cases underscore the severity of the issue. In one instance, a Victorian man was sentenced for forcing a victim to work under grueling conditions for two years, while another case involved a Darwin man charged with similar offences after allegedly recruiting deckhands through deceptive means, leading to their forced labor without pay. These incidents prompt the AFP to urge individuals, especially those hired for seasonal or temporary work in sectors like agriculture, construction, hospitality, and manufacturing, to be vigilant of forced labor indicators. The AFP's efforts to combat these crimes include using technology, developing training programs, and collaborating with state, territory, and non-government organizations. The AFP encourages anyone suspecting forced labor or exploitation to report via their confidential online form or contact number. For immediate safety concerns, the public is advised to dial Triple Zero (000).
