    Herod, Habakkuk, and Hope

    Herod, Habakkuk, and Hope

    Preached at Christ Church Anglican in Midland, Texas, on Sunday, November 27, 2022.

    Sermon text: Habakkuk 3:17-19:

    Though the fig tree should not blossom,
    nor fruit be on the vines,
    the produce of the olive fail
    and the fields yield no food,
    the flock be cut off from the fold
    and there be no herd in the stalls,
    yet I will rejoice in the Lord;
    I will take joy in the God of my salvation.
    God, the Lord, is my strength;
    he makes my feet like the deer's;
    he makes me tread on my high places.

    To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments.

    The NYC Marathon and the Race of Grace

    The NYC Marathon and the Race of Grace

    Hebrews 12:1-3

    Comparing and contrasting the NYC Marathon with our Race of Grace teaches us how to endure. In the Race of Grace, we don't just have a crowd of spectators; we have a cloud of witnesses. We don't just throw off every weight; we also throw off the mastery of sin. We don't run against anybody; we run with Jesus. He who endured before us will also run with us every step of the way.

    Preached at the Upper East Side Rehabilitation Center in NYC on November 6, 2022.

    Where Is God Going?

    Where Is God Going?

    Luke 4:14-30

    Sometimes we act like God is for us and against others. But Jesus challenges this idea by continually going beyond our borders. Are we going with him?

    We Had to Rejoice

    We Had to Rejoice

    Reading: Luke 15

    When you lose a pet, a valuable item, a loved one, or even if you're lost yourself, there's only one fitting response once found: "We had to rejoice!"

    Preached at the Upper East Side Rehabilitation Center in NYC on August 28, 2022.

    Chosen for What?

    Chosen for What?

    We often hear that God sent Jesus to reconcile us back to God. But God also sent Jesus to reconcile us back to ourselves, each other, and the rest of the created world. And, we in turn, are invited to embody that declaration.

    Preached virtually for Trinity Heights Church in NYC on August 8, 2021.

    Matthew's Subversive Genealogy

    Matthew's Subversive Genealogy

    Matthew 1:1-17

    In the first words of the New Testament, what seems like another tedious genealogy actually reveals the history of the Old Testament and the kind of people Jesus came to save--the royalty, renegades, and refuse of the world.

    Preached remotely for Trinity Heights Church on December 6, 2021
