National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

December 6th is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, an annual recognition of the Montreal Massacre. On December 6, 1989, 14 women were murdered at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal, Quebec.

In this episode, we remember the fourteen women who were murdered, and reflect upon the actions we can take to prevent gender-based violence in our communities.

We learned about the women's stories from this article from Global News (https://globalnews.ca/news/6187845/montreal-massacre-victims/#genevieve).

    STEAM Dream Team: Indigeneering

    STEAM Dream Team: Indigeneering

In this episode, Hannah, Holly, and Ali chat with Jasmine McDermott, Indigenous engineering student,  and Deanna Burgart, Indigenous engineering instructor, about being an Indigeneer (Indigenous Engineer) and their experiences as Indigenous women in the engineering field. We released this episode a day early in honour of Orange Shirt Day, a day dedicated to the coming together of communities in the spirit of reconciliation and hope because every child matters. It is a day to reflect and remember the harm and violence that was perpetrated through Residential Schools. As important as it is to remember the trauma and harm that was inflicted upon Indigenous children and communities, it is also important to celebrate and honour the incredible achievements and brilliance of Indigenous members of our community, like Jasmine and Deanna.

Big thanks to our incredible guests for being so open with their sharing with us.

STEAM Dream Team: A tribute to Mary Fowler

STEAM Dream Team: A tribute to Mary Fowler

In this very special episode, Hannah sits down with her friend of 15 years, Sue Fowler Dacey to chat about her mum, Mary Fowler, who was the first woman to graduate with a degree in engineering at McGill and all of Quebec. Mary graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1946 after 4 years of being the only woman in her classes, and a full year after high school advocating to be allowed into the program despite the fact "that girls don't do engineering". We are grateful to Sue for sharing stories of her mom's experience and grateful to Mary for her tenacious and stubborn spirit.
