On February 4, 2021, the Trial Chamber of the International Criminal Court (ICC) convicted Dominic Ongwen, a former commander of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) of 61 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity including torture, enslavement, attempted murder, murder, outrages upon personal dignity, destruction of property, forced marriage, forced pregnancy, persecution and pillaging committed during the attacks on IDP camps in Abok, Lukodi, Odek and Pajule.

The Refugee Law Project with funding from the Democratic Governance Facility (DGF) and in partnership with York University’s Conjugal Slavery in War Partnership hosted a Zoom discussion on 17 February 2020 bringing together voices of victims from the two-decade war between the LRA and the Ugandan army. Participants shared a variety of perspectives on the recent verdict.

From more than 50 nominations received, three human rights defenders in Uganda were shortlisted for the 2020 EU Human Rights Defenders Award (extracted from EU Website);

1.  Aimé Izilaba Moninga, an outspoken human rights defender, breaking new ground as leader of Men of Hope, the first organization for male survivors of conflict-related sexual violence, acting both at national and international level.

2.  Victo Nalule, is an active and inspirational advocate for disability rights, herself being a differently-abled women and founder of Tunaweza Initiative, an organization that is currently also involved in ensuring disabled women’s and children’s rights in the Covid-19 response.

3.  Damon Wamara, a fearless and hands-on rights defender in the field of child victims of trafficking, in the country and within the region, who is leading the organization Dwelling places.

Aimé Izilaba Moninga scooped the award and we congratulate him too.
