Discipleship: the Heart of Home Education (with Sheri Renno)

In this encouraging homeschool conversation I’m joined by veteran homeschool mom Sheri Renno to talk about faith-filled home education, relationships over academics, and persevering through the hard years. With over 15 years of homeschooling experience and ten children ranging from toddler to adult, Sheri shares practical wisdom shaped by real life, not idealized schedules. Sheri reflects on how her approach to homeschooling has changed over time, moving from academically driven planning to a relationship-centered philosophy that values progress, peace, and long-term fruit. She shares why reading aloud became the heartbeat of her homeschool and how shared books created lasting family culture and meaningful conversations. The conversation also explores the challenges of homeschooling, especially during seasons of exhaustion and uncertainty. Sheri speaks candidly about the early investment years when fruit felt invisible and how her husband’s encouragement played a crucial role in their perseverance. Sheri shares her simple four-part homeschool routine, her approach to independence and checklists, and why she believes a peaceful home supports stronger learning. She also shares practical ways Christian families can disciple their children, including nightly Bible reading, weaving biblical history into academics, and modeling a sincere faith at home. This chat is a gentle reminder that homeschooling is about way more than merely what our children know academically. Discipleship is the heart of home education. 👉 Subscribe for more conversations on homeschooling, motherhood, faith, and cultivating a life of humility and doxology.👉 Share this episode with a mom who could use encouragement today. Recovering the Common Arts in Classical Education with Chris Hall

What are the common arts, and why do they matter for classical education and homeschooling today—especially in an age of rapid technological change and AI? In this rich and thoughtful Homeschool Conversation, I sat down with educator, author, and common artist Chris Hall to explore how the common arts shape learning, character, and human flourishing. With nearly 30 years of experience in education, Chris explains how the common arts—such as cooking, agriculture, architecture, navigation, and craftsmanship—are essential to a full, embodied education rooted in reality rather than abstraction. Together, we discuss: What the common arts are and how they differ from chores, crafts, and technical skillsWhy the common arts have been lost over generations—and how they’re being rediscoveredHow the pandemic reshaped our relationship with embodied skills and supply chainsWhy the common arts still matter in a world of AI and digital technologyHow common arts bring the liberal arts to life in classical educationPractical ways homeschool families can begin practicing the common arts at homeThree accessible common arts every family can prioritizeChris shares powerful metaphors, real-life teaching stories, and generational wisdom, reminding listeners that education is not about speed or efficiency but formation over time. As he puts it, we are “rebuilding a cathedral,” planting seeds we may never see fully grown—but which future generations will inherit. If you’re a homeschool parent, classical educator, or lifelong learner seeking an education rooted in goodness, truth, and beauty, this episode will encourage you to start small, think long-term, and recover the arts that make us fully human. 👉 Subscribe for more conversations on homeschooling, motherhood, faith, and cultivating a life of humility and doxology.👉 Share this episode with a mom who could use encouragement today. Gospel Hope for Overwhelmed Moms with Jamie Erickson

Motherhood overwhelm is something nearly every mom experiences — even in a world filled with modern conveniences. In today's heartfelt and practical conversation I chat with Jamie Erickson, homeschool mom of five, author of The Overwhelmed Mom, and host of the Mom2Mom Podcast, to explore why overwhelm feels so pervasive for twenty-first-century mothers and how we can find peace without trying to fix everything at once. Jamie shares her personal journey into homeschooling, how her background as a classroom teacher shaped her convictions, and why God’s calling for one family isn’t a mandate for all. Together, Amy and Jamie unpack the difference between everyday tiredness and deeper overwhelm, identifying three distinct types of overwhelm that require different responses. You’ll hear Jamie explain how comparison, overcommitment, and taking on responsibilities that belong to others often fuel exhaustion. She offers a freeing perspective on “living in your season,” encouraging moms to see God’s boundaries not as limitations, but as protection — especially when seasons feel long or unending. One of the most powerful moments in the episode comes when Jamie shares a deeply personal story of crisis while writing her book, when her son became critically ill. Through that experience, she witnessed how faithful routines and a strong Christian community became tangible expressions of God’s care during acute overwhelm. This conversation is filled with practical wisdom, including: How small, incremental changes can dramatically reduce stressWhy narrating a better story about your life mattersHow five-to-ten-minute pockets of time can be redeemedWhy community is essential during overwhelming seasonsHow the Gospel meets us in burnout and sufferingIf you are a mom who feels stretched thin, burdened, or stuck in survival mode — whether you homeschool or not — this episode will encourage you to slow down, release unnecessary guilt, and trust God with what you were never meant to carry alone. 👉 Subscribe for more conversations on homeschooling, motherhood, faith, and cultivating a life of humility and doxology.👉 Share this episode with a mom who could use encouragement today. Scholé Every Day: Restful Learning for Homeschool Moms (with Brandy Vencel, Mystie Winckler, and Abby Wahl)

In this episode, I'm joined by Brandy Vencel, Mystie Winckler, and Abby Wahl (the Scholé Sisters) for a thoughtful conversation about homeschooling, reading, and cultivating a life of restful learning. What does scholé actually mean, and why does it matter for homeschool families today? The Scholé Sisters unpack the classical idea of scholé as “restful learning,” explaining how it differs from both busyness and passive relaxation. They explore how this posture shapes not only how children learn, but how mothers grow and think as well. The conversation also dives into why moms need to keep reading for themselves, even when time feels scarce. Rather than viewing reading as optional or indulgent, the Scholé Sisters argue that a mother’s intellectual life directly impacts the culture of her home. Reading forms habits of attention, discernment, and humility that overflow into family life. We also discuss how to engage children with current issues thoughtfully—without fear, finger-wagging, or avoidance. From asking good questions to learning how to listen well to people we disagree with, this episode offers practical wisdom for raising kids who can pursue truth with charity and confidence. You’ll also hear about the heart behind the Scholé Sisters’ new book, Scholé Every Day, their own reading lives, and their best tips for resetting homeschool days that have gone off the rails (spoiler: fresh air, apologies, and breakfast all make an appearance). This episode is encouragement for homeschool moms who want to think deeply, read faithfully, and live out the truth in ordinary days. 📚Get your own copy of Scholé Every Day here: https://amzn.to/4pxyU1T Show Notes and Full Transcript: https://www.humilityanddoxology.com/schole-every-day/ FREE 5 Day Gentle Homeschool Reset: https://www.humilityanddoxology.com/gentle-homeschool-reset/ While you’re here, would you take a minute to leave a rating and review in your podcast app? Classical Homeschooling with Humility and Hospitality with Dr. Joylynn Blake

In this episode of Homeschool Conversations with Humility and Doxology, I sit down with Dr. Joylynn Blake, Director of Schole Academy at Classical Academic Press, to talk about homeschooling, classical Christian education, parenting through different seasons, and living with hospitality and humility. Dr. Blake shares her unique journey into homeschooling while living in China as a missionary. With no international schools available and three young children in a 750-square-foot apartment, she began homeschooling out of necessity. That season sparked her passion for education and eventually led to advanced studies in philosophy, theology, and educational leadership. We discuss how her approach to homeschooling and classical education grew over the years. While many associate classical education with elitism and academic snobbery, Dr. Blake challenges this stereotype. She explains that: “What a classical education does is just mindful of that—that human beings are multidimensional and have many areas in which they can and should develop to the glory of God.” Throughout our conversation, a recurring theme emerges: humility, love of neighbor, and hospitality. From her mission work in China to her current role in education, Dr. Blake reminds us that education is never just about academics—it’s about cultivating the soul and orienting our hearts toward truth, goodness, and beauty. We also explore the idea of homeschooling on the “razor’s edge of weird.” Homeschoolers often get labeled as quirky, but Dr. Blake encourages us to embrace being “good weird” while remaining hospitable and approachable. For moms of younger children, she offers this encouragement: “Don’t worry about the things that aren’t worth worrying about, and that is 99% of the things.” And for moms with adult children, she emphasizes the importance of resting in God’s sufficiency: “Now, if anything, we are a coach if asked, an advisor if asked—but otherwise, I am the one who loves.” Schole Academy (https://www.scholeacademy.com/?sca_ref=5690625.N63JEbFwDq&utm_source=affiliate&utm_medium=amy-sloan&utm_campaign=standard-affiliate-commission)Classical Academic Press (https://classicalacademicpress.com/?sca_ref=5690625.N63JEbFwDq&utm_source=affiliate&utm_medium=amy-sloan&utm_campaign=standard-affiliate-commission)Classical U (https://classicalu.com/?sca_ref=5690625.N63JEbFwDq&utm_source=affiliate&utm_medium=amy-sloan&utm_campaign=standard-affiliate-commission). In this episode of Homeschool Conversations, I chat with Leilani Melendez—homeschooling mom of four, experienced teacher, and creator of Living with Eve. Leilani shares her personal journey of transitioning from the classroom to homeschooling, and how her perspective on education has shifted over the years. She offers practical insights on adapting academic lessons, balancing therapies and appointments, and inviting siblings to play an active role in the learning process. Leilani also emphasizes the importance of community and humility in the homeschool journey: “We’re not meant to be by ourselves doing things on our own.” If you’re considering homeschooling a child with special needs (or simply want encouragement to stay the course) this conversation will equip and inspire you.
