Compassionate approaches to learning and teaching.

Our learning and teaching community is hugely enriched by the diverse students and staff, who have a vast range of experiences and abilities. It is especially important that we consider those who may feel excluded by conventional approaches to learning and teaching, in order to allow all students and staff to feel a sense of belonging in our Higher Education environment.

Negotiated Assessment; An insight from the BA (Hons) Illustration course.

Listen to Ian Truelove, as he gives us an insight into how he includes negotiated assessment within level 5 of the BA (Hons) Illustration course. Negotiated assessment allows students to understand how the marking criteria translates into judgement about their work. By involving them in the process, they gain an appreciation of the complexities involved, gives them an opportunity to judge and to justify their own work and practise negotiation skills. The approach, that Ian describes, provides students with an opportunity to instantly make sense of audio feedback and maximise the information they receive towards future assessments.

Reflecting on 'A Sense of Presence'.

At last years DEAP conference, Dave White shared his thoughts on 'A Sense of Presence', supported by Ian Truelove, during a time of refocusing and mass shift to online delivery. In this reflection, Dave and Ian recall the unexpected challenges they faced during last year's keynote, and those that unfolded throughout the academic year. Considering the obstacles that emerged and the knowledge gained, they describe how a true sense of presence was formed. Through this reflection, they contemplate a vision of placemaking and presence as we start to explore beyond Covid-19.
