All the people who work on The Red Review live and work on stolen Indigenous lands across Turtle Island. There can be no reconciliation without restitution, which includes Land Back, RCMP off Indigenous land, and seizing the assets of the major resource corporations and returning them to the commons.

In December 2022, the Canadian government announced its intention to award Lockheed Martin a contract to supply Canada with 88 F-35 fighter jets. Projected life-time costs currently stand at over $77 billion CAD, making this the second largest procurement in Canadian history.

Is this the latest escalation in the new cold war with Russia and China? Or is maybe Canada already at war with Russia?

We asked Tamara Lorincz, a fellow of the Canadian Foreign Policy Institute and organizer with the No Fighter Jets Coalition, this question and more. From the purchase of nuclear-armed war planes, to the supposed Chinese 'spy' balloon, and all the way to the Russia-Ukraine war, Emily and Daniel discuss with Tamara what this all means for the international working class and the prospect for peace.

Tamara Lorincz and Socialist Action are both members of the No Fighter Jets Coalition and the Canada-Wide Peace and Justice Network, which are organizing a weekend of action between Feb. 24-26. Resources and information below.

Radical Vancouver Politics — The Birth of Vote Socialist

Radical Vancouver Politics — The Birth of Vote Socialist

All the people who work on The Red Review live and work on stolen Indigenous lands across Turtle Island. There can be no reconciliation without restitution, which includes Land Back, RCMP off Indigenous land, and seizing the assets of the major resource corporations and returning them to the commons.

On May 1st, 2022, a new united front electoral alliance launched in Vancouver. With demands to defund the Vancouver Police Department, build public housing, and to tax big corporations, Vote Socialist ran a five month whirlwind of a campaign that netted its three candidates — Sean Orr for city council, Dr. Karina Zeidler for school board, and Andrea Pinochet-Escudero for park board — a combined 45,000 votes. This is the story of how Vote Socialist came to be.

We sat down with two core members of Vote Socialist, Yvonne Hanson and Mark Lister, who breakdown key demands, political stunts, and the future of this grassroots united front.

30 Minutes to a General Strike with OPSEU SEFPO Executive Board Member Julius Arscott

30 Minutes to a General Strike with OPSEU SEFPO Executive Board Member Julius Arscott

All the people who work on The Red Review live and work on stolen Indigenous lands across Turtle Island. There can be no reconciliation without restitution, which includes Land Back, RCMP off Indigenous land, and seizing the assets of the major resource corporations and returning them to the commons.

We were 30 minutes away from a call for a general strike. 30 minutes. RankandFile leaked it, and militants with exec positions in large unions confirmed — at 10 a.m. on Monday, November the 7th, multiple large unions with the backing of the Ontario Federation of Labour and the Canadian Labour Congress were going to announce a general strike. This is the story of how we got to that point.

Hosts Emily and Daniel recount that events that led this labour movement to precipice of historic mass job action — the OSBCU strike, Bill 28, and OPSEU solidarity wildcat actions. They are joined by Julius Arscott, a three-term OPSEU SEFPO Executive Board Member and 2021 candidate for President of the Canadian Labour Congress, who shares what happened behind the scenes and why a general strike is closer than in a very long time.

Socialists in the October Municipal Elections | with VOTE Socialist and Municipal Socialist Alliance

    Wali's Bio:
Wali became a Canadian citizen last winter, having immigrated from Pakistan nearly 10 years ago. He subscribed to the clichéd image of Canada: that it was fair, compassionate, and built in partnership with the Indigenous peoples. That image was quickly shattered.
Now, he's fighting for the Canada that was promised. Wali has long been an advocate for electoral reform, holistic social supports, and de-colonization. He is an active community volunteer, keeps close to the grassroots, and is a passionate activist for Indigenous rights from Turtle Island to Palestine.
He is taking his fight forward by running, as part of the Municipal Socialist Alliance team, to be Councillor for Ward 14 - Toronto-Danforth on a platform that features immediate housing for people experiencing homelessness or precarious housing; improved public safety by significantly de-funding the police and investing in community well-being; and rebuilding Toronto's infrastructure with climate change and population growth in mind.
