People Over Policy Mattie Holloway

Mattie talks with a student in New Hanover County who identifies as trans, non-binary, and gender-nonconforming to hear about their experience and what they think is still needed to make schools more accepting. 

Mattie talks to a former member of the NCHSAA's board to discuss the association's gender identity policy. Then, she talks with Orange County's chief equity officer, Dena Keeling to hear what Dena thinks is still needed to make schools more inclusive. 

Mattie first looks at how LGBTQ+ policies were introduced in the North Carolina public school system. Then, she learns how a policy comes to be by examining New Hanover County's policy that allows middle school students to play for the sports team that aligns with their gender identity.
