Are your notes finished yet? Conversations for Today's Mental Health Professionals Kristi Cash White

Dr. Victoria E. Kress is the director of the Clinical, Mental Health, and Addictions counseling programs at Youngstown State University, Ohio. Dr. Kress advocates for the counseling profession at the local and national level, and she shares unique insights into the crisis of advocacy the counseling profession faces at the local and national level — and what we can do about it. 

Among other achievements, Dr. Kress is a past president of Chi Sigma Iota International, and the Ohio Counseling Association. She has published over 120 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, and has co-authored five books on counseling, both adults and children.

Michael is a sought-after advisor, strategist, copywriter, creative director, and digital marketer with over a decade of experience in the mental health industry. He is a great cheerleader and advocate of counselors as they grow their practices, and also for the  counseling profession in general. 

In today's episode, Michael and I talk about that intersection between mental health work and the business side of the practice.

In this episode, I interview Dr. Thomas Skovholt, a leading researcher on counselor development and the author of 14 books and over 100 articles. We discuss the premise of his well regarded book, "The Resilient Practioner" in context of counseling during a global pandemic. He shares valuable insights and tools for avoiding burnout during difficult times. 

Kimberly Dudley is a dual licensed board certified therapist, specializing in trauma recovery in the Pacific Northwest. In addition to private practice, she is a domestic violence advocate, speaker and trainer with specialized training in interpersonal neurobiology, story-informed trauma therapy and brain spotting. She has worked with inner city teen parents, and she is currently working on her first book, "Parenting Teens With Trauma Stories". 

I asked Kimberly to talk to me today about her experience as a trauma therapist and the challenges of vicarious trauma.

I am Kristi Cash White, a licensed counselor and PhD candidate. I want to create a space where counselors and others come to chat about issues that are important to them. Some of the topics I will cover this season: Burnout & Self-care, Mindfulness for Counselors, Teaching the Next Generation of Counselors, Laws Impacting Therapy, Therapists in Specializations, Leadership & Advocacy, and Social Justice. 

My hope is to provide a place of listening and learning for those who have been in the field for 25 years, like myself, or for those considering starting a Master’s program. This will also be a great resource for those who are counseling-adjacent - those who are interested in topics related to counseling and psychology or who are a cheerleader for someone in the field.
