    Redefining the "Strong Black Woman" with Sharon Joseph

    This week on the Shaping Freedom Podcast with Lisane Basquiat, we are sitting down with Sharon Joseph, CEO of the Boys and Girls Club of Harlem. However, Sharon is so much more than just a leader. She is a mother, daughter, founder of the Harlem Lanes bowling club—a black and women-owned and led business—and breast cancer survivor. Today, we’re going to explore what it means to break the silence of suffering as a black woman.  There has been a pervasive myth circling our culture that women, especially black women, have to be strong, resilient, and often quiet about their struggles. Sharon’s mother went through it with her health struggles, and while facing Sharon’s own challenges, she knew her story had to be different. Throughout this episode, we’re going to learn how to accept the support we need, how to speak up when we are struggling, and how to keep laughing when life is putting us down. The end of the year is a powerful time for everyone. It’s a time for us to reflect on what has shaped our year. Now there is time and space to ponder how our relationships with our friends, family, and ourselves have defined us. We can question what we have learned, how we have grown, and even how we cope with the trauma and loss that follows so many of us.  To honor this time of the year we have pulled together the best conversations Shaping Freedom has hosted into one big collection of moments that will help you process the year in an intelligent and deliberate way.     Family in Focus: Celebrating Our Top Talks From 2024

    2024 is not a year any of us will forget anytime soon. The positives and negatives that defined this year have everyone reflecting and predicting what is waiting for us in 2025. Shaping Freedom is taking the time to look back on some of our best conversations this year with the amazing people trying to push us forward in our relationships, communities, and lives.  But before all of that, it has to be said that parents today have never had it as hard as it is. 24-hour news cycles, social media, societal instability, and a very uncertain future have left parents feeling adrift within themselves and how they raise their children. This is why we pulled our best conversations from the year and cut them together, to act as a guide moving forward. We’re going to hear from Brock Johnson on how growing up in a household with entrepreneurial parents contributed to his journey of becoming a social media expert and building a family-run business. We’re going to hear from Abby Kamen on what it means to be an authentic parent versus an authoritative one, and we’re going to hear from Monica Wisdom about how to navigate life without parents being present and so many more incredible voices that offer up their stories, their experiences, and their wisdom.  Parenting isn’t the only thing we must reflect on this year. In this episode, we pulled some of our best conversations yet with people like Aaron Robinson, former NFL player Chukky Okobi, and painter and artist Joseph Awuah-Darko to cover topics such as loss, generational trauma, what it is like to be from an immigrant family in the United States, and most importantly how we grow and strengthen our family bonds.  This is Shaping Freedom and we all wish every person, parent, and family the absolute best moving into the new year.

    Art, Activism, and Abolition: Crafting Legacy w/ Patrisse Cullors

    Today on Shaping Freedom, we have a truly extraordinary guest to help guide us through this challenging and uncertain time. We have the honor of speaking with Patrisse Cullors, a co-founder of the Black Lives Matter movement. However, Patrisse is so much than that. She is an artist, author, creative, and visionary behind a new art collective, The Crenshaw Dairy Mart. Throughout our conversation we are going to explore what it means to embrace joy despite the struggles of both internal and external forces working to pull us down. We will learn how to honor and nurture the legacy we build for ourselves and for others and why we need artistry in the worlds we build. Patrisse reflects deeply on her journey, from where she comes from to her unwavering mission to challenge systems of oppression and reimagine possibilities for the future.
