Why Moms of Autistics Need a Shared Community of Others Who Support Them and Understand Autism

I’ve shared my experience with others while trying to navigate my autism journey along the way. My journey started out very different as opposed to where it is now. 

It was really hard in the beginning but is so much better now. This is why I focus on finding a supportive community. 

It started out difficult because my son had not been diagnosed and was still very young. When he was born, I was in my 40’s and my parents had passed away. Our family lived in other states. 

It was just us. Having a newborn came naturally to me. He was such an easy baby. It wasn’t until he wasn’t meeting his speech milestones that we became concerned. 

I joined a moms group for moms with toddlers. Soon after, we went through the process of getting his hearing checked and an autism evaluation.

The moms in the group were not familiar with autism. They were in denial of his symptoms and tried to get me to ignore the possibility of autism. It wasn’t because they were mean, but because they were protecting me…and themselves. 

I was super involved with this group of moms and was on the leadership team. The moms in the group were mostly wonderful, but the leadership team was a nightmare… as in a cliquish nightmare that you might experience in a highschool setting!

Soon after the diagnosis, I got away from that group and focused on helping my son without all the distractions. 

Moms often say it is too hard dealing with others who don’t get autism. They are right in that it is hard, but I soon learned that it isn’t too hard. 

My husband and I thought we could handle it all on our own. You know what I mean, I am pretty sure most of us have been there. 

Unfortunately, we both experienced back to back medical emergencies and realized we needed others. 

I believe that God intended us to go through life together and not entirely alone. I have learne
