    Suboxone and Other Medically Assisted Treatment

    One new aspect of addiction treatment that has become popular in recent years is the use of medically assisted treatment (also known as MAT). It is used to treat many substance use disorders as well as to prevent overdose. Due to the recent opioid epidemic, MAT is being used as an alternative to abstinence based recovery. MAT is primarily used for the treatment of addiction to opioids such as heroin and prescription pain relievers that contain opiates. In this episode, we’ll explore the effectiveness of Suboxone and other medically assisted treatment when treating substance use disorder. While many programs rely on drugs like Suboxone as the "gold standard" for opiate recovery, Richie, Mark, and John explore other alternatives and explain why Suboxone isn't a one-size-fits-all solution. It's easy to see medication-assisted treatment as a cure for addiction, but the team explains that no medication is truly effective at managing addictive behaviors without psychosocial support like 12-step programs, therapy, and counseling. Mental health, in particular, plays a vital role in managing addiction, and John shares his insights into supporting medication-assisted treatment with mental health counseling.

BlueCrest CEO Richie Hession joins interventionist John Troche to talk about the truth behind successful—and not so successful—interventions in real life. John discusses the aspects of interventions that many people don't understand, such as carefully selecting participants and doing deep background research before setting up a meeting. He also highlights some of the unexpected complications that make interventions challenging, including tracking down a homeless loved one and persuading a client that they won't lose their dog if they enter treatment.
