The Phantom of the Opera (2004) feat. Bartees Strange

Prepare yourself for bloat and bombast because we're discussing Joel Schumacher's 2004 adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera for its 20th anniversary! Tagging in for the conversation is queer musician Bartees Strange, who provides some much needed musical insight on the film. Join us as we try to figure out why this movie doesn't sing (sorry) the way it should. It's a constant war of style vs. substance, with a lot of visuals that look great....but mean nothing. Adding insult to injury is the perplexing decision to cast non-singer Gerard Butler as the Phantom, who makes some questionable decisions regarding the villain's characterization. Plus: Emmy Rossum's breakout role, Patrick Wilson's Lord Farquad haircut, reprise after reprise after reprise, golden arm candelabra holders and a runaway chandelier. ***Episode Correction: During his prodcution history, Trace says that the stage production of The Phantom of the Opera premiered in 1968, but it was actually 1986. There are many like it, but this is one of the best and most insightful dissections of queer-lens horror. Delightful any time of day or night.

I've loved listening to so many episodes of this podcast! I am old enough that I saw a lot of the 80s slashers when they were in the theaters, so it's fun to hear younger guys' takes. Both hosts are well-spoken and witty. If I must criticize anything, they should consider verifying the pronunciation of names.

Show is pretty good. I only listen to a small percent of their episodes now because they do so many uninteresting movies and the majority of their posts are patreon clips. Main complaint is the guy who is constantly saying “mmmmmm hmmm” in a condescending tone when the others make a point. Have a new go-to. It’s SO obnoxious.
