The Quiet Earth is not regulation SPS

TIL about a SPS scene in the 1985 New Zealand cult classic The Quiet Earth. Played on a no-regulation 12 by 6 board by the looks of it so I quickly lost interest.
Genius!

Absolute, unmitigated genius! This is the greatest podcast ever made. The dramatic tension between the wide-eyed, nice-guy Me1 and the dastardly Me2, the expert commentary and the intricate mystery of who farted in frame eight make this podcasts tantamount to sipping fine wine, reading Shakespeare and watching Fellini at the same time. Mr. Herring, you have outdone yourself and I’m prepared to follow you over the edge of the abyss and into the depths of insanity.
Flashback

This reminds me of the 14-year old me playing subbuteo (perhaps the next series Richard?)... taking the role of both players, referee and commentry... and maticulously maintain statistics... I am enjoying the character development as well as being a third party to someone exploring the sanity over a snooker 'board'. Thanks mate.
My Suspicion is...

He lost his mind during the last series of aiotm and this is the result —a victim of dissociative identity disorder. My other thought is this is a postmodern and much funnier version of the terrible Jim Carey movie, Me, Myself & Irene. I don’t really remember the movie well, but doesn’t the building animosity between Me 1 and Me 2 suggest the dénouement will have one of the me’s achieving victory over the other in a battle of wills? Also, didn’t the two personalities in the movie fight over the same girl?
