Free Things to Do; Cancer Screening

The Week at Duke {in 60 Seconds}
Welcome to the week at Duke in 60 seconds. Cell stiffness is one indicator of cancer, and Duke researchers have developed a new technique to measure it. The researchers shine a laser through a cell and then compare it to an unobstructed beam. It’s much quicker than currently available tests without sacrificing accuracy. After tenting ended in K-ville this season, a Duke housekeeper collected a huge tarp covering one of the tents and shipped it to her home village in Guyana, South America. There it will be used as a roof for a Vacation Bible School. Don’t miss out on all the free things to do at Duke this month, including the Alice Fest Film Festival, an artist lecture at the Nasher, and yoga sessions on East Campus. Finally, Duke professor Vincent Conitzer recently won the weekly New Yorker cartoon caption contest. The cartoon of a shark eating a mannequin inspired Conitzer’s punchline, “The doctor said it might help me quit.” For more Duke news every day, visit Duke Today.
