27 Rouge

Thinking of the leaders of new school journalism, names like Matt Taibi, Glenn Greenwald, and now Scott Newman come to mind. Through the platform that is 27 Rouge, Scott hosts and dissects a variety of different conversationalists that all bring something fresh and unique to the table. In an era of clickbait, or more often rage-bait culture, Scott conducts a refreshing and balanced interview. As a listener, I do not feel like a narrative is being pushed or even suggested upon me. I walk away from each episode feeling as if I got the best understanding of the guest and pertinent subject matters related to their background. Excited to see how Scott and 27 Rouge grow.

As the Heather McDonald interview was an early episode, perhaps the issue has already been addressed, but I must say something lest it has not. An interviewer must bring something to the conversation in addition to his admiration for the interviewee. However much he may wish to have what sounds like a casual conversation, he is not, in fact, having a meandering chat with an old friend. That it may sound casual is part of the artifice of an artful podcast. There must be some preparation. Most particularly, an interviewer must prepare and eat his lunch BEFORE the interview commences. What may we look forward to next? The musical tinkle of water into water, and the gentle susurration of a distant toilet? Heather, as usual, was magnificent.
