From Recruiter Skeptic to Recruitment Pro: How to Be a Headhunter Who Gets It w/ Chris Yee

Some of the best recruiters used to be professionals who hated recruiters. That’s because they had to interact with wannabe headhunters who didn’t really take the time to understand the industry they were hiring for. What companies and candidates want is a recruiter who feels like an industry insider - someone who goes beyond the general information most headhunters give. That’s why former professionals in specific niches make such excellent recruiters in that dig. They can go into the business and be immediately different from the recruiters they used to hate. Being a recruiter who “gets it” often means digging deeper than what you’re hearing from HR. HR doesn’t feel the pain points of the person who needs the hire in their department. That’s where that industry experience comes into play. How did Chris Yee go from a professional who hated recruiters to an exceptional recruiter in his own right? What did he do to be different from the recruiters he used to interact with? In this episode, the founder of Zenith Search Partners talks about what drives success in this business, and why it hasn’t changed in 5 decades.    Guest Bio Chris Yee is the founder of Zenith Search Partners. Building on a base of experience in managing, leading and driving multinational organizations through emerging high-growth and market down-turn cycles, Chris is well-positioned to help his clients in the chemical industry attract and retain the top talent they need in today’s complex environment. Prior to launching Zenith Search Partners, Chris served as a product director for Univar, where he was responsible for setting and executing marketing strategy. He also managed corporate supply negotiations and procurement strategies, while enhancing and cultivating relationships with sustainable suppliers. Previously he was an account manager with Lubrizol, where he strengthened the company’s dominant market position by providing clients with value-added marketing services and introducing new lubricant additive products. How Recruiting Went from Just a Job to a Meaningful Purpose w/ Beth Armstrong

Talent acquisition isn’t a first career choice for most recruiters, and honestly, it starts out as just a job for many of us. But then a switch flips, and the job turns into a passion and a purpose for helping people. It stops being about order taking or just putting butts in seats. It becomes a real drive to touch the lives of candidates, and help them connect their skills with the right opportunities. This human-focused approach to recruiting touches every part of the process, and it can’t be replaced by AI. Sure, we can use AI to automate messages, but it might make the company come across as cold and not worth working for. We can use AI to sort through the hundreds of resumes in our email inboxes, but a great recruiter can see something on the resume that technology might miss. That’s why success in this business is really about having a purpose and passion for human beings. For Beth Armstrong, that’s how a job turned into a calling. What does she love about this job? How does she show care for people beyond filling a vacancy? In this episode, the Talent acquisition lead at VaynerX talks about her passion for recruiting and what makes her excel at her job.   Guest Bio Beth Armstrong is the Talent acquisition lead at VaynerX. Over the past few years, she’s positioned herself to be a well-rounded recruiter filling positions across all functions within marketing: Creative, Account, Paid Media, Production, Technology, Strategy, Analytics, and all the departments in between. As Beth has grown, she’s realized her true passion for Talent Acquisition. She is a builder and loves implementing processes, developing strategies, educating others about the function, career counseling, and solving problems. Beth is a big believer that for Talent Acquisition to be successful the function needs to be seen as a strategic partner contributing to organizational growth objectives. How to Unlock High Performance by Rethinking Your Thoughts w/ Jamie Damsker

When we think of what unlocks high performance at work - effective leadership, passion and good culture - we usually focus on adding a skill or level of knowledge.  What if we already possess everything we need, but it’s just being obscured by our own thoughts? What if instead of focusing on doing more, we could pivot to being more?  Everyone in the workplace - in the whole world, in fact, is driven by thousands of unexamined and unquestioned thoughts. These thoughts in turn, get in the way of how we show up. You can’t lead effectively, or work effectively if you’re at the mercy of your thoughts.  By becoming aware of these thoughts, we can do away with the ones that hold us back and double down on thoughts that get us what we want.  High performance lies at the intersection of knowledge, expertise and a way of being that’s consistent with what we want to create. Once you have that, there’s no betting against you or your company.  How does changing our relationship with our thoughts unlock performance?  In this episode, I’m joined by public speaker and leadership coach, Jamie Damsker. He shares how he helps individuals and organizations achieve at a higher level.    Guest Bio Jamie Damsker is a public speaker and leadership coach committed to waking people up to the extraordinary leader and performer in each of us. His professional life began with a distinguished career as a US Air Force military officer and aviator in fighter aircraft. Jamie has led men and women in combat earning the Distinguished Flying Cross as well as other awards. Upon leaving the military, he found opportunities to make profound impacts in technology deployment and strategic consulting for clients in both the public and private sectors. He helped build consulting verticals into multi-million dollar businesses and facilitated international corporate acquisitions. Jamie left that behind when he came to realize his true passions are public speaking and coaching. In his speaking engagements, he creates a unique conversational environment that has his audience discover the possibilities of their own capacity as leaders and high performers. Jamie does this through a combination of a compelling message, his energetic presence, and a presentation that is experiential for those in the audience. In a more intimate coaching relationship with leaders, Jamie helps his clients create a life consistent with their desired, extraordinary outcomes. Beyond Skill Set: How to Attract Passionate, Aligned Talent for Startups w/ Elena Stefanopol

In the world of startups, getting the right talent on board is mission critical. You need to have the right team to get that early momentum and ultimate success. The challenge is, in a fast-paced environment, companies struggle to distill their vision in a way that connects with people outside of the organization. On top of that, in those early stages, it’s hard to dig for the intangible skills your company needs, and create a value proposition that attracts the talent you want. Startups need passionate employees to drive them forward, but that’s not always easy to spot in a speedy interview and hiring process. There is a way… If you can find someone with a passion for something in their lives, and their skills align with what you do, you’ve found a great hire! Don’t listen for a canned answer to a classic interview question. Look for a spark when they’re talking about something that they’re passionate about outside of work. How can startups make the hiring process easier? How do you create a compelling reason for people to work with you outside of a paycheck? In this episode, I’m joined by the head of Talent at Labelbox, Elena Stefanopol. She reveals the secret to a successful startup on the talent side, Labelbox’s semi-hybrid model, and how to set people up to their best selves at work.   Guest Bio Elena Stefanopol is the Head of Talent at Labelbox. She is an architect of people systems and she connects the dots across Talent - Acquisition, Management and Development. Elena is adding performance management, leadership coaching and L&D to the mix to power high performing teams at Labelbox. She is also one of HIGHER's Global Top 100 TA Leaders and ex-Airbnb team member.  Connect with Elena on LinkedIn and visit https://www.higherhq.com/video-content/v/3mw67hebc2lbnb8gskzskwpkhl465f. Motivation: The Ultimate Fuel for Success At Work w/ Sarah Stones

The recruiting game is built on connecting talent to organizations based on 2 requirements. We look for a match based on skill and experience. The problem is this approach overlooks a very important requirement which can make or break the match - motivation. Every individual has a unique set of personal motivators. From stability to autonomy and mastery - people in the workplace are motivated by different things. Just like different cars need different fuel, people are at their best when the job tops up their tank with the right things for them. Adding personal motivators to the hiring equation allows companies to bring the best out of employees and contributes to the success of the business. It adds an additional leg to the recruiting stool and makes it more stable. What happens when there’s a mismatch between a person’s motivators and the job role? Can companies hire for personal motivators? In this episode, I’m joined by motivation specialist, business speaker, coach and team trainer, Sarah Stones. She shares why we have to add motivation to the recruiting equation.    Guest Bio Sarah Stones is a motivation specialist, business speaker, coach, team trainer and founder of Plain Sailing Motivation. With over 20 years of experience in HR and motivation coaching,  Sarah helps individuals and businesses achieve their goals by understanding and harnessing the power of motivation. Her approach is grounded in a unique blend of personal resilience and professional expertise, offering practical strategies that make a real difference. Don’t Focus on the Perfect Pitch: How to Recruit Through Conversations w/ Blake Chastain

Recruiting may be a sales job where we pitch candidates to companies, but that doesn’t mean we have to be robots.  Many people try to come up with the perfect script or pitch that will lead to a placement, but they miss the point. A one-size-fits-all approach will never make for long term success because you can’t build trust that way.  The best recruiters know that the job is really about having open-ended conversations, listening for people’s motivation and providing the solution that’s right for both sides. You have to be inquisitive and curious instead of making one static approach work for everyone.  How do you take a more flexible approach to conversation instead of sticking with a static script? How is the construction industry dealing with the remote/hybrid/in-office trilemma?  In this episode, I’m joined by the owner of MRI of Zionsville, Blake Chastain. He shares his story, and the secrets that make his team so successful.   Guest Bio Blake Chastain is the owner of MRI of Zionsville in Indiana. He has devoted more than 15 years to sales and recruiting. He earned MRI Networks Pacesetter Award - the franchise’s top award 13 times. He primarily recruits for sales engineers and managers in the civil construction industry. His office has filled positions in Manufacturing, Engineering/Architectural Design, Accounting/Finance, Technical Sales  in the last decade. Follow him on LinkedIn. How to Bridge Across Differences and Create Belonging At Work w/ Beth Ridley

As recruiters, we’re well aware that for a candidate, getting the job is only the first step in the journey. In order to excel in the organization, they have to show up to work and feel like they belong.  Every human being brings their entire self to work. They are an amalgamation of all of their identity and life experiences. When the culture within an organization is narrow, people can struggle to feel like they fit in.  This in turn, can hinder their ability to innovate, raise their hands for projects, do what they do well and thrive professionally. When we bridge across differences and make everyone feel like they belong, the culture gets stronger, people will dig deep and engage in the work, and that makes the company more successful.  How can leaders make sure they foster belonging? How do we create space for people to show up authentically at work? In this episode, I’m joined by author, speaker, and organizational transformation consultant and the CEO of Ridley Consulting Group, Beth Ridley. We talk about the secret sauce of every thriving organization - a culture of belonging.    Guest Bio Beth Ridley is a former corporate executive turned organizational transformation consultant, speaker and author. Beth combines 25 years of global leadership and management consulting experience with expertise in inclusion, belonging and positive psychology to partner with leaders to transform workplace cultures to better achieve their vision and goals. Beth’s work is featured in national publications and she frequently delivers keynotes and workshops at events around the world. Beth lives with her husband and three children in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
