RIP The Acolyte

Lucasfilm canceled The Acolyte. While that will cause a stir in the fandom, how many people actually watched it? 1:00 – The Acolyte Canceled Deadline broke the news that Disney/LucasFilm canceled The Acolyte after only one eight-episode season. According to the numbers in Deadline’s article, 11.1 viewers watched the premiere in its first week. However, the show dropped off the Nielsen top 10 streaming shows for the rest of its season until the finale. The finale saw the lowest for any Star Wars series in history. 3:00 – The Biggest Debut of 2024? The series was touted as the biggest debut of 2024. However, More people watched Ahsoka last year, and that show cost far less to produce than The Acolyte. When a single episode costs more than Godzilla Minus One, which won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, it better have enough of an audience to justify its expense. In the end, while it is sad to hear about people losing their jobs, the show was just bad.

Batman: Caped Crusader Review

The latest Batman animated series, Batman: Caped Crusader, is on Amazon Prime. Is it a spiritual successor to the legendary Batman TAS? This review is a little different from others because we will look at the entire series rather than a single episode. 10 episodes were released all at once. Batman: Caped Crusader was announced a few years ago, long before the WBD merger and the hiring of James Gunn as DC’s Kevin Feige. You may remember that DC projects were scrapped during that merger, including the Batgirl movie. You can check out individual episode reviews here. The Good * The Cast – Hamish Linklater nails it as Batman without sounding like he’s doing a Kevin Conroy impression * The setting – The classic noir environment feels fresh, yet still nostalgic * Batman himself – Batman has long been referred to as The World’s Greatest Detective, which is a vibe rarely depicted outside of comics * Several episodes were written by actual comic writers The Bad * Gender-swapping Penguin is stupid * Harley Quinn is nothing like her comic book or animated counterparts and seems out of place with no Joker around Overall, this is a very solid Batman adaption. Sure, there are other liberties with characters, such as a black Commissioner Gordon, but those don’t stick out nearly as much as the changes to Penguin and Harley Quinn

Geekville Radio #371: Deadpool & Wolverine review

An obscure little film you may have heard of recently hit theaters. Deadpool and Wolverine is the most anticipated entry in the MCU since Avengers: Endgame. 2:45 – Review Naturally, there are a lot of cameos, sight gags, and F-bombs, but we expect that from a Deadpool movie. And yet after all that, this may have been the best depiction of Wolverine, and that’s saying something given how well Jackman knows the character. 16:30 – Where do we go from here? This will likely usher in the Multiverse War, which we’ll see in Doomsday and Secret Wars.

Transformers One, Superman & Lois, Creature Commandoes, Tales of the TMNT

Geekville Radio is back to cover the San Diego Comic-Con we didn’t discuss in the last episode. We cover the new Transformers One trailer, the final season of Superman & Lois, Creature Commandoes, and Tales of the TMNT. 1:00 – Transformers One Examining the second “Transformers One” Trailer 7:55 – Superman & Lois Season 4 The trailer shows very little about the season other than clearly Superman is dead and the Kent family grieves while Lex Luthor gloats. CW released a sneak peek at the season premiere which gives us a good look at the battle between Superman and Doomsday. If you like slow-motion action cuts, then this clip is for you! The Death Of Superman story was a huge success for DC back in 1992 and has been adapted several times. This will be the second live-action version after the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice feature film. 14:30 – Creature Commandoes Trailer Monsters vs. Nazis looks tailor-made for James Gunn 16:45 – TMNT Trailer This latest TMNT reboot serves as a bridge between last year’s movie and the next feature film

Doctor Doom's Day

It’s the shock felt around the world! Robert Downey Jr. is BACK in the MCU! But not as Tony Stark/Iron Man, the role he seemed born to play, but as arguably the #1 Marvel villain of all time DOCTOR DOOM! 2:25 – Why is RDJ back? Why did Marvel bring back RDJ? This may be Marvel acknowledging that they drove off some fans. This was like a 1-2 Punch. Bringing back the Russo brothers to direct the next Avengers movies was the first punch. The second was bringing RDJ back. Downey’s first appearance wasn’t confirmed but it would make sense for Doom to debut in the next Fantastic Four movie since his history is so closely tied to theirs. But how can he play Doom after that iconic run as Tony Stark? There are two main scenarios. 9:30 – Scenario #1: He is simply Victor Von Doom Robert Downey Jr. is not only a versatile actor but he can look like a completely different person. Robert Downey Jr. is more than capable of playing completely different-looking people. Plus, as comics fans know, Doctor Doom wears a mask ALL THE TIME! 13:25 – Scenario #2 Doom is a variant of Tony Stark The other more likely scenario is that the MCU Doctor Doom is a variant of Tony Stark. This not only would fit with The Multiverse Saga’s theme of showing how different characters can be in different universes, but it would also be an inverse mirror to the Infinity Saga. Tony Stark is the top hero of the first saga and the top villain of the second. Believe it or not, there is a precedent for Tony Stark becoming Doctor Doom in the comics.

Captain America 4 Trailer, Acolyte Season Finale

We have the first trailer for the fourth Captain America MCU film and the finale for the first season of The Acolyte. 1:00 – Captain America 4 Trailer The written rundown with screencaps can be found here. 14:25 – The Acolyte Episode 8 Our written review can be found here. 26:55 – What Does This All Mean? This series came across like somebody who took somebody else’s work and changed it for self-insertion. Every single male character was stupid and/or evil. Darth Plagueis created life? That’s because he saw a Strong Female Character do it first. Anakin was the first to be created by The Force? Nope. We got not one, but TWO Strong Female Characters created before Anakin. It’s such an uncreative egotistical thing to do.

Agatha All Along and The Acolyte Episode 7

We got our first look at Agatha All Along. Plus, our obligatory review of The Acolyte Episode 7. 1:05 – Agatha All Along The often-renamed Agatha Harkness series got its first trailer and release date. It looks like it will be to horror what WandaVision was to sitcoms. The story looks to be about Agatha breaking free of the Hex/TV World she was imprisoned in at the end of WandaVision. But isn’t Wanda dead? Hmmm…. 6:50 – The Acolyte Episode 7 The penultimate episode of The Acolyte didn’t really reveal anything new. Apparently, in their search for signs of life on Brendok, the Jedi did not notice the giant artificially lit mountain with a structure built inside of it. 19:45 – What Does This All Mean? The last we saw of Koril she turned into a fart and seemingly flew off. We’ve said from the beginning that one of the mothers is the Sith Lord who Qimir is seeking approval from.

Batman Caped Crusader Trailer, Acolyte Ep 6

We got our first look at Batman: Caped Crusader along with a voice cast. Plus, our obligatory review of The Acolyte Episode 6. 1:25 – Batman: Caped Crusader WBD released the first trailer for Batman: Caped Crusader. The voice cast includes One thing that separates Caped Crusader from previous Batman animated series is it will not be geared for a family-friendly audience. 2:45 – The Acolyte Episode 6 The much-lampooned The Acolyte followed up an action-packed episode with one where nothing happened. 20:05 – What Does This All Mean? The way the episode ended implied that the twins may switch roles after all, with Mae turning good and Osha turning evil. We considered back in the first two episodes. It’s also likely that the next episode will be another flashback where we see what really happened to the witch coven a few episodes ago. And given this show’s foreshadowing is about as subtle as a bowling ball hitting a strike, we can probably tell who was Qimir’s master.
