Guest: Ben Whately | Neural networks, how the brain learns a language, and founding his startup company Memrise

Ben Whately is the CSO and co-founder of Memrise.  A psychologist by education, with a Masters in Experimental Psychology from Oxford where he focused on neural networks and computational modelling of human learning, Ben has spent the last 15 years looking at ways to learn and teach languages.
While studying psychology, he formed a theory for why this is, and founded the startup company Memrise in order to bring that theory into reality. He believes that people fundamentally learn languages to connect with other people or because they are enamored of the culture of that language, and Memrise strives to embody this experience of connection.
Ben is also a prolific angel investor, investing in and advising more than 50 companies in the UK startup ecosystem, with a focus on Al, machine learning and climate tech.
In this episode, we talk a lot about how the brain learns a new language as well as Ben's experience founding and growing a startup company.

Fantastic

I really like Grant’s calm demeanor and he really does make these complex conversations easy to understand to someone who isn’t trained in tech. Absolutely love the podcast.

ChatGPT

Grant is giving a great and simple understanding of how ChatGPT and ChatGPT-3 is being used by comparing it to how GPS first came about and our awe of the thought of “magic” being used.
This is a great half hour+ on how the backend is created and diffusing and giving thoughts to if it is human.

Great insights and advice from a seasoned leader

Listened to a few of these podcasts and what a treat to hear insights from a seasoned technology leader. Specifically, Grant’s advice on asking for a pay raise was a very methodical and data centric approach which should be met with very positive results.
