Just Dive In with Lauren Pickman (Episode 70)

This week on the show Kathryn and Kristi are joined by Lauren Pickman. Lauren is a central figure of the cycling community in Bentonville, AR and founding member of the Women of Oz cycling group. The group started with a handful of women who were curious about getting out onto the trails in Bentonville and has now expanded to include weekly groups rides, clinics, and a free monthly flagship group ride that regularly has over 150 women. The mission of the Women of Oz is to break down barriers for women who want to take up mountain biking and gravel riding in NW Arkansas, by providing education, facilitating access to equipment, and providing a safe and welcoming group atmosphere. Lauren gives us a few of her expert tips on how to start or get involved in group rides in our own local areas.

Lauren is also the co-founder of the Rule of Three, a bike race that emcompasses riding on tarmac, gravel, and single track. Although there is some hard core racing at the front, it is safe to say that the Rule of Three has adopted the “Mullet Protocol” and there are many fun times to be had for all riders at any pace. Registration for the event opens February 3rd, 2022. You can learn more about it at their website ruleofthree.bike.

You can connect with Lauren via email at lauren@womenofoznwa.com, follow the Women of Oz on Instagram @womenofoznwa and visit their website at woznwa.com.

Make a Change with Jill Nazeer (Episode 68)

Make a Change with Jill Nazeer (Episode 68)

This week on the show Kathryn and Kristi are chatting with cyclist and marketing guru Jill Nazeer. Jill is the Marketing Director for the Alta Cycling group, the parent company for Diamondback Bikes. Diamondback has been rolling full steam ahead into the world of gravel, and in 2020 they partnered with their sponsored athlete Rach McBride to develop the Eat My Dust gravel scholarship. The goal of the scholarship was to bring more self-identifying female, trans and non-binary folks into gravel cycling, and the winner of the scholarship received a complete gravel rider starter pack including a Diamondback bike. Through this scholarship Jill & Rach’s aim is to lower the barriers of entry for folks looking to be part of the gravel cycling community. They want to make folks of all identities feel welcome in the gravel space.

Nominations for 2021 will open in mid-October and can be found on the Diamondback website at www.diamondback.com. Follow @diamondbackbike on Instagram to learn more about the brand and stay up-to-date on all of the great things they are doing in the cycling community.

Plan the Perfect Route with Linda English (Episode 67)

Plan the Perfect Route with Linda English (Episode 67)

On this week’s episode of Girls Gone Gravel Kathryn and Kristi catch up with cyclist and route-planning expert Linda English. In 2014 Linda and her husband founded Dirty Freehub, an online resource for cyclists looking for vetted gravel routes. Since then, the site has grown into a non-profit organization that offers resources to gravel cyclists looking to plan rides and routes across the western US, encompassing over 8000 miles of riding.

Linda fills us in on how the site got started, how they choose and name the routes, and why it is important to them to develop stewardship for cyclists in the areas in which we ride. Dirty Freehub works with towns and tourism organizations to promote unique areas and must-see places along their routes. They also provide resources for cyclists on recommended safety equipment and navigational tools, and Linda gives us a few of her best tips for cyclists starting out in route planning and navigation.

To learn more about Dirty Freehub and to plan your next great ride go to https://dirtyfreehub.com or visit them on Facebook & Instagram @dirtyfreehub

Jess & Laura’s Big Adventure with Laura King & Jess Cerra (Episode 66)

Jess & Laura’s Big Adventure with Laura King & Jess Cerra (Episode 66)

This week on the podcast Kathryn and Kristi welcome back two recurring guests, Laura King & Jess Cerra, to talk about their most recent bike packing adventure. After Jess hosted her gravel event the Last Best Ride in Whitefish MT, the pair packed up their gear and headed for the Colorado trail for an epic 4-day trip. They fill us in on all of the details, from what they packed, their route, the bikes they rode, and even how they filled their time off the trail during the trip.

As performance-focus athletes, Jess and Laura explain how they designed the trip to push them both physically and mentally, as it was a way to get out of the comfort zone of their typical training grind. They tell us about the challenges of jumping into a new discipline of cycling, and how they managed the unknown terrain in the high alpine.

Love At First Ride with Mari Holden (Episode 65)

Love At First Ride with Mari Holden (Episode 65)

This week on the podcast Kathryn & Kristi chat with former professional cyclist Mari Holden. Mari confesses she has been in love with the sport of cycling since getting her first bike as a kid. This love took her all the way to the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, where she won a silver medal in the time trial. Mari spent her professional cycling career racing on the road across Europe and North America in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. She talks about the changes she has seen in the cycling industry since then, and reiterates why it is important that we keep advocating for more media coverage of women’s racing to continue to bring exposure and attention to women’s cycling.

After retiring from her own athletic career, Mari worked as the director for team Twenty20, and now serves as the Community Director for USA Cycling. She is passionate about diversifying the sport and getting more people, especially young women, on bikes.

Mari took part in her first gravel race this year at the Last Best Ride. She tells us what she loves most about gravel, and how embracing a new discipline of cycling has helped keep her excited about the sport.
