Essential Information
I suffered a stroke in 2016 due to a vertebral artery dissection. That ended my swimming “career” but brought me to cycling and I fell in deep. Over the next few years I lost 25 pounds, essentially all of my muscle mass above the waste. Once I hit 40 I really started to feel it and it became clear that I needed to change my training style. Serendipitously, this is when I discovered Derek Teel and Dialed Health. Strength training prevents injury, preserves neuromuscular connections (I can’t afford to lose any more), and makes me feel more confident/stable/productive when riding and doing the activities of daily life. The Dialed Health podcast is an essential resource that is packed with useful information. What I learn listening helps me optimize my training, nutrition, recovery, and much more.
Positive and Practical
Derek stays positive and practical to help make cycling and strength fun. He is a BLESSING!
Dunn interview #2
Amazing interview and conversation.
I’m 48 and want to get faster on the bike. However, this podcast reminded me why I love strength training (I’ve been strength training since I was in fifth grade doing curls with a speaker in a bag and vertical jumping trying to touch the ceiling).
I will keep my balance of 4-5 rides a week and 2 full body strength training sessions during my race season, and in the off season flip that to 3 strength sessions and 3-4 rides per week.
Hope you are getting better, and thank you for being such a good roll model (even for us aging gym bro’s who try to ride bikes now).
Take care.
