Now after these events Paul resolved in the Spirit to pass through Macedonia and Achaia and go to Jerusalem, saying, “After I have been there, I must also see Rome.” 22 그래서 자기를 돕는 사람들 가운데서 디모데와 에라스도 두 사람을 마케도니아로 보내고, 자기는 얼마 동안 아시아에 더 머물러 있었다. And having sent into Macedonia two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while. 23 그 무렵에 주님의 '도' 때문에 적지 않은 소동이 일어났다. About that time there arose no little disturbance concerning the Way. 24 데메드리오라고 하는 은장이가 은으로 아데미 여신의 모형 신전들을 만들어서, 직공들에게 적지 않은 돈벌이를 시켜주었다. For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the craftsmen. 25 그가 직공들과 이런 일에 종사하는 사람들을 모아 놓고 말하였다. "여러분, 여러분이 아시는 바와 같이, 우리는 이 사업으로 잘 살고 있습니다. These he gathered together, with the workmen in similar trades, and said, “Men, you know that from this business we have our wealth. 26 그런데 여러분이 보고 듣는 대로, 바울이라는 이 사람이 에베소에서뿐만 아니라, 거의 온 아시아에 걸쳐서, 사람의 손으로 만든 신은 신이 아니라고 말하면서, 많은 사람을 설득해서 마음을 돌려놓았습니다. And you see and hear that not only in Ephesus but in almost all of Asia this Paul has persuaded and turned away a great many people, saying that gods made with hands are not gods. 27 그러니 우리의 이 사업이 명성을 잃을 위험이 있을 뿐만 아니라, 위대한 아데미 여신의 신전도 무시당하고, 또 나아가서는 온 아시아와 온 세계가 숭배하는 이 여신의 위신이 땅에 떨어지고 말 위험이 있습니다." And there is danger not only that this trade of ours may come into disrepute but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis may be counted as nothing, and that she may even be deposed from her magnificence, she whom all Asia and the world worship.” 28 거기에 서 있는 사람들이 이 말을 듣고 격분해서 "에베소 사람의 아데미 여신은 위대하다!" 하고 소리를 질렀다. When they heard this they were enraged and were crying out, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” 29 그래서 온 도시는 큰 혼란에 빠졌고, 군중이 바울의 동행자들인 마케도니아 사람 가이오와 아리스다고를 붙잡아서 한꺼번에 극장으로 몰려 들어갔다. So the city was filled with the confusion, and they rushed together into the theater, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians who were Paul's companions in travel. 32 극장 안에서는, 더러는 이렇게 외치고, 더러는 저렇게 외치는 바람에, 모임은 혼란에 빠지고, 무엇 때문에 자기들이 모여들었는지조차 알지 못하는 사람이 많았다. Now some cried out one thing, some another, for the assembly was in confusion, and most of them did not know why they had come together. 34 그러나 군중은 알렉산더가 유대 사람인 것을 알고는, 모두 한 목소리로 거의 두 시간 동안이나 "에베소 사람의 아데미 여신은 위대하다!" 하고 외쳤다. But when they recognized that he was a Jew, for about two hours they all cried out with one voice, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” 35 드디어 시청 서기관이 무리를 진정시키고 나서 말하였다. "에베소 시민 여러분, 우리의 도시 에베소가 위대한 아데미 여신과 하늘에서 내린 그 신상을 모신 신전 수호자임을 모르는 사람이 어디 있습니까? And when the town clerk had quieted the crowd, he said, “Men of Ephesus, who is there who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple keeper of the great Artemis, and of the sacred stone that fell from the sky? 36 이것은 부인할 수 없는 사실이니, 여러분은 마땅히 진정하고, 절대로 경솔한 행동을 해서는 안됩니다. Seeing then that these things cannot be denied, you ought to be quiet and do nothing rash. 37 신전 물건을 도둑질한 사람도 아니요 우리 여신을 모독한 사람도 아닌 이 사람들을, 여러분은 여기에 끌고 왔습니다. For you have brought these men here who are neither sacrilegious nor blasphemers of our goddess. 38 그러므로 데메드리오와 그와 함께 있는 직공들이 누구를 걸어서 송사할 일이 있으면, 재판정도 열려 있고, 총독들도 있으니, 당사자들이 서로 고소도 하고, 맞고소도 해야 할 것입니다. If therefore Demetrius and the craftsmen with him have a complaint against anyone, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls. Let them bring charges against one another. 39 여러분이 이 이상으로 해결하고자 하는 어떤 문제가 있으면, 그것은 정식 집회에서 처리되어야 할 것입니다. But if you seek anything further, it shall be settled in the regular assembly. 40 우리는 오늘 일어난 이 일 때문에, 소요죄로 문책을 받을 위험이 있습니다. 우리는 이 소요를 정당화할 수 있는 아무런 명분이 없습니다." For we really are in danger of being charged with rioting today, since there is no cause that we can give to justify this commotion.” 41 이렇게 말하고서, 그는 모임을 해산시켰다. And when he had said these things, he dismissed the assembly.
