The Essential Craftsman - Scott Wadsworth

The Essential Craftsman - Scott Wadsworth

Welcome to  the Grit Nation podcast, I’m Joe Cadwell and in this episode I have the pleasure of speaking with logger, blacksmith, carpenter, and internet sensation Scott Wadsworth.
Better known to over 1 million YouTube followers as the Essential Craftsman, Scott, together with his son Nate, have created a wealth of entertaining and educational videos designed to help anyone interested in learning more about blue-collar craft skills.
Scotts laid back, straight shooting, and down to earth demeaner resonates well both on and off camera and I found this interview to be truly enjoyable.
We’ll start our conversation by learning how Scott got involved in the building trades over 4 decades ago and what he believes some of the bigger industry changes and challenges have been.
Next, Scott will share details of individuals he has met as a professional builder and what characteristics and attributes they possessed that made them so memorable and influential in his life.
Later, we’ll dig into the concept of “workmanship of risk vs. workmanship of certainty” and why a healthy balance of both is needed both on and off the job to achieve a career and life, full of meaning and reward.
We’ll then discuss why now more than ever a career as a building trades professional can produce the same or greater socio-economic gains as a college degree and investigate some of the factors responsible for shifting this paradigm.
And we’ll wrap up our conversation by discussing what it means to be a Craftsman and why Scott’s definition of success doesn’t rely solely on how many digits you have in your savings account.

Welcome to Grit Nation, I’m Joe Cadwell the host of the show and today I have the pleasure of speaking with author Kim Kelly about her new book titled Fight Like Hell – The Untold History of American Labor.
Kim’s book is a remarkable interweaving of past and present that brings America’s rich and bloody labor history to vivid life.
Her book comes at a time of economic reckoning in America. From Amazon Warehouses to Starbucks coffee shops, interest in organized labor is at a peak not seen in more than half a century.
We’ll open our conversation by learning why Kim transitioned from writing about heavy metal and country music for Vibe Magazine to covering worker rights issues.
Next, we’ll discuss the significant role women have played in the labor movement as we dig into the stories of historical figures such as Lucy Parsons and Mother Jones.
Later, we’ll look into the recent win for workers at an Amazon Warehouse in New York and what it means for the organized labor in the years to come.
And we’ll wrap up our conversation by understanding the connection between the struggle for rights for people with disability and the labor movement.

Pandemic Inc: Chasing the Thieves and Capitalist Who Got Rich While We Got Sick - David McSwane

Welcome to another episode of Grit Nation, I’m Joe Cadwell the host of the show and today I will be talking with investigative reporter David McSwane about his new book Pandemic Inc. – Chasing the Capitalists and Thieves Who Got Rich While We Got Sick.
David’s book is an explosive look inside the rush to profit from the Covid-19 pandemic and connects the dots between shady backdoor deals and a robust spoils systems that led to a catastrophic mishandling of the pandemic.
Pandemic Inc is a brilliant nonfiction thriller that takes us behind the scenes to reveal how traders, contractors and healthcare companies used one of the darkest moments in American history to fill their pockets.
During our conversation David will introduce us to a host of characters he met while writing his story. From the fraudster who signed a million-dollar contract with the government to provide lifesaving PPE and yet came up with not a single mask to the Navy admiral at the helm of the national hunt for medical supplies.
David’s roller coaster of a story takes us inside private jets and dirty warehouses as he seeks to expose the stranger than fiction criminal enterprise that played out in real time right before our very eyes.

On the Line - A Story of Class, Solidarity and Two Women's Epic Fight to Start a Union - Daisy Pitkin

On the Line - A Story of Class, Solidarity and Two Women's Epic Fight to Start a Union - Daisy Pitkin

On today’s episode I have the pleasure to speak with author Daisy Pitken about her new book titled, On the Line - A story of class, solidarity, and Two Women’s Epic Fight to Build a Union.
In her book, Daisy recounts the story of a grueling 5 yearlong bottom-up campaign she was involved in to help unionize industrial laundry workers in Phoenix, Arizona.
This book is both riveting and intimate and paints a humanizing portrait of the American labor movement.
We begin our conversation by learning about the hazardous jobsite conditions that drove these primarily Latino workers to seek union representation in the first place, and how the multinational corporate owned cleaning firms deployed strong arm, union busting tactics in an attempt to squash their organizing efforts.
Next, we’ll look into the role professional union organizers play in guiding those who seek representation and analyze the differences in what’s at stake for both.
Later Daisy will elaborate on her relationship with rank-and-file activist Alma Gomez Garcia who she met on the campaign, and why she feels Alma’s unshakable courage and resolve makes her one of the gutsiest fighters she’s ever known.
And we’ll end our conversation by unpacking the underlying personal attributes that are needed to survive a years long campaign and how true transformation and growth can be achieved while doing so.
This is one of my favorite interviews to date and I hope you can help share Daisy’s message of inspiration with those who you think may benefit from it.

    Carpenters Stories - Jimmy Jones

    Carpenters Stories - Jimmy Jones

    Welcome to Carpenter Stories.
I’m Joe Cadwell, the writer, producer and host of the show and I am proud to bring you this special series within the Grit NW podcast.
Carpenter Stories will introduce you to individuals whose lives have been bettered after finding a career as a professional tradesperson in the UBC.
On today’s show I have the pleasure to speak with Jimmy Jones, retired Journeyman carpenter, and member of the local 271.
I met Jim a few years ago and have admired his positive attitude and can-do spirit. Jim exemplifies what someone in the trades can achieve through hard work, tenacity, and ability to grow and change with the industry.
We’ll start our conversation by learning why Jim decided to leave Oregon State University where he was working on a degree in forest engineering to become a full-time carpenter.
Next, we’ll hear some of the challenges and biases he encountered on the job that stemmed from his not going through a recognized union apprenticeship.
Later Jim will tell us about his time spent as a Job Corp instructor and how he feels his career came full circle when he was able to give back and share the knowledge and insight he had acquired over the years in the trades.
And we’ll finish our conversation when I ask Jim to answer 3 questions designed to give guidance and direction to anyone interested in becoming a professional trades person.
This is a great episode full of humor and stories that you won’t want to miss.
So, sit back, and enjoy Jimmy Jones, Carpenter Story.

Great first episode!!

I didn’t know what to expect when I first saw this but I am glad I gave it a listen. Informative and relevant to my trade and career. Wasn’t aware how important politics were to the health of my union. Looking forward to hearing where this podcast goes. Episode 4 is the best episode yet. Not wanting to sound too appreciative but I’m glad someone is doing this. Mark really put into perspective everything me and my family’s value as a union family. Thank you for putting together a great show pres Joe.
