In their conversation Phil talks a little bit about where he lives in Sussex in England and his neighbors David Gilmore, Bill Bruford Then he talks guitars, particularly his Gibson Firebird VII and what he was using for amps back in the day and now and the guitar he’s still craving. Phil tells us a bit about his book “50 Years of Music” and what he’s using for gear for the book tour and where to get the self published book. Phil describes growing up in Havana Cuba during the revolution… and learning the guitar amongst the chaos. He also describes living in Hawaii just as it became a state and how that inspired a song “Hula Kula” for Roxy Music. Phil describes playing through a Hiwatt amp while Brian Ferry was singing in Roxy Music. Phil tells us about how he ended up in England and how he befriended David Gilmore and he disspells the rumors that he joined Roxy Music initially as a guitar tech. Phil describes being ahead of his time or at least being the cutting edge of fashion and musical trends and how everyone from Roxy Music at this advanced age are still making music and he describes what being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame means to him and the band. In their conversation Brian tells us about his new project, a book documenting his and his business partner Peter Margolis collection of vintage Marshall amplifiers titled “Collecting Loud History”. Brian also tells us about when he started his business restoring vintage Marshall’s in the early ’80’s and how he became an authorized repair person from Jim Marshall. Brian talks about growing up in Western New York working for bands and what brought him to LA. Brian talks about doing tech work on the road with (Carmine Appice’s) King Cobra, Richard Marx and REO Speedwagon and his experiences with Gary Richrath and Dave Amato and how he got Dave hooked on vintage gear. He also tells us about working for David Lee Roth. Brian describes his collection of guitars and amps and his rental business renting Marshall’s for studio work and Marshall prop gear for music videos and tv shows.     154 - Peter Margolis (Collecting Loud History) In episode 154 of “Have Guitar Will Travel”, presented by Vintage Guitar Magazine, host James Patrick Regan speaks with Author, Director and Marshall amplifier collector as well as guitarist, Peter Margolis. In their conversation Peter tells us about his new project, a book documenting his and his business partner Brian Ranks collection of vintage Marshall amplifiers titled “Collecting Loud History”. Peter describes how his small collection of vintage Marshall’s was destroyed in the ’94 LA earthquake and that led him to his partner in the collection Brian Ranks through pedal board manufacturer Bob Bradshaw and from there the collection grew. Peter tells us about his early collection and his band in the ‘80’s and what Hollywood and the greater LA area were like at that time. Peter tells us about his tv and film career starting on the Young and the Restless, Soap, the Voice and eventually doing a documentary on his friend and teacher Randy Rhodes. Peter talks about his very first concert Quiet Riot and how that led to taking lessons and becoming friends with Randy Rhodes. Peter tells us about purchasing guitar parts from Grover Jackson and his collection of Charvels as well as his other guitars within his collection. Peter tells us about Randy Rhodes before Ozzy and his tapes of his lessons and note books of Randy’s notes to him and describes a bit of the documentary he made of the pre Ozzy relationship between Randy and singer Kevin Dubrow from Quiet Riot. Peter describes the pre “hair band” era of Hollywood was like. Finally Peter tells us how the LA fires changed his outlook on keeping his collection in the LA area there and where he’s planning on taking it and plans for a volume two of the book. In their conversation Paul discusses comparing the new Fender Tone Master amps to his 1964 Fender Deluxe… Paul tells us about his tour schedule and the rigors of touring his Canadian homeland both solo and with his band Cousin Harley he also describes what it’s like booking himself. Paul talks about his guitar building business most of which he sells on Facebook and Instagram. Paul describes his guitar collection including a few highlights: a Wandre Bridget Bardot, a 1931 Gibson L5, a Larrivee Nylon string, and a Gibson 350 and ES 125 TDC. Paul talks about growing up in Toronto playing in bars starting at age 13 and going to the university of Toronto to study classical music with a degree in theory and composition and what brought him to the West Coast of Canada. Paul tells us about his rockabilly instructional dvds which are legendary, he also talks about his current Patreon lessons and his private lessons. In their conversation Brad tells us about his path to working with ukulele’s, working in a music store, the military, getting a fine arts degree and eventually doing set up’s on ukuleles at Ohana. Brad explains what it takes to make custom ukuleles, a C&C machine a laser engraver and a lot of hand work sanding and glueing and putting together the fine details. Brad talks about his musical history going to GIT in Hollywood playing in punk bands and following the Warped Tour. Brad talks about how he learned to build ukuleles by reverse engineering the defective ones that came through the shop as well as doing repairs on vintage Kamaka and Martin ukuleles. Brad tells us about the woods he works with and the qualities of the different woods as well as the difficulties of working with certain types of woods and he explains the “Bubble” ukulele… which you need to see to understand.
