On Time: Making the most of the time we have with Sebene Selassie

How do we make the most of our time here on this earth? This month we’ve discussed the minutes in our days with Laura Vanderkam, the productivity of our weeks and months with Cal Newport, and the cadence of our years with Natalie Nixon. Today, Sebene Selassie is here to talk with us about time over the course of a full life. Sebene is a writer, teacher, and lifetime student of Buddhism. She’s also a woman living with metastatic breast cancer. She sits down with Jessi to share some of what she has learned in the 20 years since her diagnosis, about control, surrender, and connection.

On Time: Move, Think, and Rest with Natalie Nixon

On Time: Move, Think, and Rest with Natalie Nixon

In the first episode of this month’s series on time, Laura Vanderkam taught us how to make every minute of each day count. Last week Cal Newport redefined productivity over the course of weeks. But how do you string those days and weeks together into a fulfilling career? Our guest today is helping us to examine the cadence of our years and decades. Natalie Nixon is a creativity strategist, entrepreneur, and thought leader. She’s the author of The Creativity Leap and is working on a second book introducing her “Move, Think, Rest” framework for unlocking your fullest potential. She sits down with Jessi to discuss how movement and rest fuel deep thought, how we can cultivate work differently, and how to fall in love with the process rather than obsess over the outcome.

On Time: Cal Newport redefines productivity

On Time: Cal Newport redefines productivity

How do we measure productivity? Our default metric tends to be activity. How many emails did you send? How many words did you write? How quickly did you respond to that Slack message? Cal Newport, computer science professor at Georgetown and author of “Slow Productivity: The Lost Art of Accomplishment Without Burnout” advocates for a different framework. Rather than thinking about how much activity you have in a day, Cal wants you to consider: how do you work to land at the bigger outcomes and goals? In the second episode of our month-long series about how we make the most of our time, we’re zooming out from hours and days and examining time over the course of weeks. Cal sits down with Jessi to offer strategies for achieving long term productivity, speaking to the importance of quality over quantity, the power of boredom, and the future of technology as it relates to how we spend our time.

The Hello Monday Master Class: Think Long Term with Dorie Clark

Welcome back to the Hello Monday Master Class! We've distilled the essence of hundreds of conversations into five essential rules that will empower you to thrive in an ever-changing professional landscape. Welcome to our final week!
This week, we’ll take a look at the role of time - and even more importantly, at the role of long term thinking - in achieving our biggest and sometimes scariest goals. In this episode, we learn from Dorie Clark. Dorie is widely known as an author, a speaker, and a professor. She’s a powerful business thinker, and she’s currently pursuing a totally new dream. Dorie’s writing a musical she hopes will land on Broadway and to do this, she's is putting her own advice into practice. She has set a goal for herself on a ten-year timeline. She’s a little more than halfway through that decade right now, and she has a lot to teach us about how to make big strides on a long time-horizon. There’s no wishful thinking here; instead, Dorie teaches us how to make big swings seem like practical and achievable ambitions. For this week’s exercise, we’re leaning into our biggest and most ambitious dreams.
What’s something you want to achieve that seems worth ten years of your attention and hard work? You’ll know you’re on the right track if you feel vaguely terrified. When you’ve got it, head over to our free Hello Monday group on LinkedIn and share that big goal on our week five post. Samhita walks us through this realization after landing her dream job as executive editor of Teen Vogue and realizing it wasn’t all she’d thought it would be. Great host, easy discussion

I think the host does a really wonderful job, she has a pleasant and kind demeanor, and she seems to bring the best out of her guest… It’s a soothing business show that actually races, provocative and thoughtful issues. Better than your traditional business podcast, in my view.
