The Great Feather Heist | Frederick Douglass: The Icon Behind Black History Month

Hi there! We saved you a spot in the smoke circle! Puff, puff, pass y'all!  Otherwise, KT has some "Cab Sav" for you if you're interested. This week's episode covers a wide span of history starting with Laurel's story of more recent times about the Feather Heist of a scientifically and historically priceless collection of rare birds from the British Natural History Museum.  It is WILD so buckle in for the ride.  I mean, did you know there is basically a fly fishing underground?! What? After our great heist adventure, KT takes us further back in the history books and tells us about the great Frederick Douglass, who inspired Black History Month.  We also get to meet the amazing women in his life that helped him achieve all the great things he accomplished. ~~~~~~ This episode is a "remastering" and made for video version. Some editing has been done since its original release in July 2021. Apologies for some of the audio issues in this episode, it was from our very early recording days! :-) Thank you for your patience! ~~~~~~ The Socials: Instagram-- @HighTalesofHistory TikTok-- @HighTalesof HistoryPod YouTube-- https://www.youtube.com/@hightalesofhistory Patreon-- www.patreon.com/HighTalesofHistory Email -- hightailinghistorypod@gmail.com ~~~~~~ Sources: The Feather Heist-- Cole, Sean. “The Feather Heist.” This American Life, 10 May 2018, www.thisamericanlife.org/654/the-feather-heist. Yi Sun-sin, Korea's Greatest Admiral | The Theft of the Mona Lisa

It's episode 93 and it is time for some HIGH seas and some HIGH-sts (heists, we might have been trying a bit too hard there with the word play) First up, Kt takes us to Korea during Japan's invasions of the nation, commonly known as the Imjin War in Korea's Joseon Period (1392 to 1910). There we meet Korea's great admiral, Yi Sun-sin, who won several key battles against the odds, helping to turn the tides of the war. Next, we head to 1911 Paris and watch as the heist of the world's most famous painting unfolds at the Louvre--the theft of Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa. You won't believe how lax the security was and how easy it was to pluck pieces off the wall and walk out... *~*~*~*~*  Mentioned in the Episode: Map of Korean Peninsula (North and South Korea didn't exist at this time, this map is just to show the geography and location of Korea) Map of the Battle of Meyongeyang   Map of the Battle of Noryang High Tales of History Episode 4: https://open.spotify.com/episode/3dXDOSSdwGIHo3rkwNNw9G  High Tales of History Episode 8 (Kt's History Crush): https://open.spotify.com/episode/4NP6N73C9DbQLmeBDBfjXm  *~*~*~*~* The Socials and Patreon! The Werewolf Trials of Europe | The Affair of the Poisons

Well howdy and welcome to episode 90 of High Tales of History! For the month of October we are taking a trip into spooky and horrible histories and in episode 90, we are taking a trip to Europe to hear all about their werewolf trials which came out of the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries' anxieties about religious and political clashes as well as a gross attempt to find a scapegoat for these changes and harsh conditions. Next, we head to the court of France's King Louis XIV, a place that is already a hotbed of jealousy, deceit and ambition and add poison and magic spells meant to eliminate enemies and influence their position at court. We also take a side trip to Italy to learn about the Aqua Tofana poison ring which may have been responsible for 600 deaths! *~*~*~*~* Mentioned in the Episode: Episode 31: History's Worst Serial Killers You've Never Heard Of *~*~*~*~*~ The Socials and Patreon! The Sword in the Bosnian Stone | The Mysterious Death of Rudolf Diesel

Welcome to season four! To kick it off, we go to the not so distant past to a remarkable archeological find in Bosnia in 2019--a (probably) 14th century sword in the stone! From there, we travel back further into history to meet the inventor of the one of the most disruptive pieces of technology in at the turn of the 20th century--the diesel engine, created by Rudolf Diesel. While crossing the English Channel on an overnight ferry, Diesel disappeared. Was it suicide? Murder? Was the body found (yet not recovered) even his? The questions that swirled around the mysterious circumstances of his disappearance also fueled conspiracy theories that put two of the world's most powerful men as the culprits for his murder--John D. Rockefeller and Germany's Emperor Kaiser Wilhelm II. *~*~*~*~*~ The Socials and Patreon! The 1908 Great Car Race | George Remus, The King of the Bootleggers

It’s episode 87, our last one for season 3! To end it on a bang, we are doing some adventure and true crime history! We are joined by Laurel’s husband, Kristian, back from Season One Episode 4 to hear about another wild race from history—the 1908 Great Car Race in which six cars went on a race from New York to Paris. We follow it up with George Remus, known as King of the Bootleggers as well as quite possibly F. Scott Fitzgerald’s inspiration for Jay Gatsby! Remus was once a criminal defense lawyer who turned to bootleggers and used his smarts to run a huge bootlegging game in the Midwest with the aim of owning ALL the pre-Prohibition bourbon….that is until snitches and murder unravel him *~*~*~*~*~ The Socials and Patreon!
