Tetris's Cold War Origins | Nintendo vs. Sega Console War | Ancient Civilizations and Solar Eclipses
Welcome to season three! We are thrilled to be back with you and thrilled to be back with one of our favorite guests, Dr. Darren R. Reid, history professor at Coventry University in Coventry, England. We previously had Dr. Reid on in episodes 52 and 53 (linked below if you want to hear!) to talk to us about Indigenous representation in popular movies and they quickly became listener favorites.
This time around, he's bringing his passion for pop culture history with the story of the game of Tetris. From its origins behind the Iron Curtain of the Soviet Union to becoming the best selling game in the world.
Next, Laurel presses "start player 2" and picks it up with the console wars between Nintendo and Sega during the 80s and 90s. It was Sonic vs. Mario, David vs. Goliath, underdogs vs. the video game titans, who emerges as the winner?
Finally, Kt brings it to the final level with ancient civilizations and how they handled solar eclipses. What did these great cosmic events mean to ancient peoples? Were they seen as a bad omen? It's a totally different topic altogether because this is Hightailing Through History where two sisters get high and surprise each other with a story from history's vault of the weird and the wonderful!
If you like what you hear, please subscribe/follow, rate and review. It means so much and it helps our show grow!

The True History of Lemuria, a Fake Place with Justin McHenry | Australia's Emu War
It's our season 2 finale so hop in your wicker basket and get ready for some wild intergalactic travel we have guest Justin McHenry in the Smoke Circle to talk about a fake place that has some very real history--Lemuria!
Justin has written the book "Lemuria: A True Story of a Fake Place" which takes the reader from its real origins in 19th century science all the way through its adoption by new age spirituality! Justin also later gives us a Lemuria true crime story that he only briefly touches on in the book so the Smoke Circle gets all the tea on that, lucky us!
But the wild ride doesn't stop there, KT has her own slice of weird history she brings to the episode regarding Australia's war against a mighty foe: standing 6 feet tall with the ability to disembowel a human if things go sideways...the Emu.
We are off for the next six weeks and will be back with you again on April 19th, 2024...just in time for our favorite holiday... *wink!* In the meantime, please keep up with us on Instagram @hightailinghistory or on TikTok @HightailingHistoryPod

Josephine Baker | The War on Disco and Chicago's Disco Demolition Night
Welcome to season 2, episode 7! We're celebrating Black history in the Smoke Circle! First up, Laurel takes us back to roaring 20s Paris to meet Josephine Baker, the Jazz Age star, who was not only a singing and dancing star in the early 20th century, but also was a spy for the French Resistance during WWII and spent her later years as an activist for the Civil Rights Movement in America.
Next, we puff, puff, pass it to KT, who picks history up in the late 1970s, when disco ruled the airwaves...but not everyone was happy about that. Learn about Chicago's Disco Demolition Night and how "the war" against disco wasn't just about upbeat, danceable music...it also showed some ugly truths about the permeation of white supremacy in America.
