CRUMBS Cafe

CRUMBS Cafe was an Upstate New York radio show from January 2007 to September 2015 where local musicians stopped by the CRUMBS Cafe Studio for an interview and a couple of songs. Often we get the chance to record rare, acoustic versions of your favorite local songs. These weekly shows give musicians the outlet to chat a bit about whom they are, what their songs are all about, or even the local music scene in general. These episodes were also heard on Exit 97.7 WEXT every Friday night and blogged about on the Times Union website.

    Nightmare River Band - Episode 149

    19 May 2012: Making music about 'love, loss, pain, drinking and healing,' although not necessarily in that order, The Nightmare River Band was named one of the Top 5 up and coming Alt-Folk bands in NYC by Deli Magazine in 2010. Crowds of revelers have been quick to join the party, clamoring to shout along the lyrics with drinks clutched in their hands. In between playing shows, downing pints and winning over critics, core members Matt Krahula (vocals, guitar, ukulele) and Seth Faulk (drums, vocals) managed to find time to write and record a follow up to their 2009 debut Call The Cops! The new album, Last Goodbye, offers up standouts such as 'Mary.' A demo of that song was nominated for an Independent Music Award for best Alt-Country song of 2010. The full version combines all of the ingredients of The Nightmare River Bands potent blend: foot-stomping rhythms, full arrangements, and a harmonious chorus that everyone can sing along to - even after consuming more than a few beers. The Nightmare River Band has drawn comparisons to alt/folk/country contemporaries such as Mumford and Sons and The Avett Brothers. While this sound is rapidly gaining popularity and bandwagon jumpers, The Nightmare River Band is continuing to do just what theyve done since their formation, taking their music on the road to bring the Nightmare to your town.

    Hearing Aides - Episode 147

    10 Apr 2012: The Hearing Aides are a hard rocking, noise mongering power trio from upstate New York. They like to play loud music thats also kind of pretty ... sometimes. Brian Patrik sings and plays raunchy Big Muff-fueled guitar. Mark Adamo beats the holy living hell out of his drum set. Rob Piccola abuses his bass like it just looked at him the wrong way. With their powers combined, the members of The Hearing Aides are assaulting the Capital Region one venue at a time, offering a crash course in ear-bleeding to all the wimpified, so-called 'rock' bands out there. Last year, the debut album 'Go Deaf With The Hearing Aides!', produced by the legendary Don Fury, introduced the world to this trios sonic belligerence - but thats just the tip of the iceberg. Meaner, leaner and armed with new material, The Hearing Aides are poised to unleash even more snarling riffs, pounding rhythms and hummable melodies on unsuspecting audiences all over.

    Holly and Evan - Episode 146

    05 Apr 2012: Holly and Evan are the blues. Both from long, rich musical backgrounds, Holly Taormina and Evan Conway have updated the tradition of the Barrelhouse, with their unique style. Together, they showcase a wide range of original and cover material, in the styles of Blues, Jazz, and Soul. The originals, which are often featured on: WRPI 91.5, WVCR 88.3, WEXT 97.7, WCDB 90.9, WEQX 102.7 and on this radio show; are catchy, with a lot of personality, and will appeal to audiences everywhere!

    Charmboy - Episode 145

    27 Mar 2012: Three small town kids brought up on hard rock and psychedelic music in the 70s, Charmboys members long for rocks bad ol days. Unapologetic guitar rock without gimmick or pretense. Charmboys new CD offering 'Let It Feed' is a time capsule of unapologetic guitar rock, born of the true golden age of Rock and Roll. Guitarist Eric Halder penned and sings lead on eight of the nine tracks, with a vocal style that is part spoken-word, not unlike Jimi Hendrix or Phil Lynott. I suspect it is an intentional nod. In the tradition of rocking power trios, the rhythm section is tight, fueled by the rock steady beat of drummer Scott Smith, along with the soulful, flowing and heavy bass lines of baby monster Sarah Clark, who adds backing vocals as well. Riding shotgun with a banshee wail of a guitar sound is Halder, and at his hand, notes get bent, tones get distorted and volumes pushed.

    Immune Friction - Episode 144

    20 Mar 2012: Bennington, Vermont based band Immune Friction started off as a pseudonym for Manhattan-born singer/songwriter Christopher Dayton. Along with being a gifted writer, he honed his musical skills in college, graduating with a degree in music from Keene State. Chris focused mainly on guitar, but he also plays piano, drums, bass, and sings. He began playing open mics while in school and went on to play at many local venues and opening for several acts. He collaborated with many musicians, trying to achieve the perfect mix for his music until he met drummer/singer Justine Curry in 2010. Justine is a native of Pittsfield, Massachusetts and has been singing since she was 4 years old. Drumming didnt come until later, although she cites watching her older sister learn the instrument growing up as a big influence. It turned out to be in her blood, as she would later find out that her great-grandfather was a jazz drummer. Chris and Justine started meeting to work on a few of Daytons songs and had instant musical chemistry, even laying down a recording the first day! He had long been looking for a female vocalist to join his band and her drumming style fit his songs perfectly. Along with then bassist Jeff Coulter, the group played a few gigs and recorded an album before Jeff moved away to study art. Instead of disbanding, or looking for a replacement, the two decided to move ahead as a duo and havent looked back.

    Eastbound Jesus - Episode 143

    13 Mar 2012: One chilly evening, early in the fall of 2010, Adam Brockway, Dave Wright, Carl Anderson, Luke Anderson and Zack Infante gathered by a wood stove in a barn on the outskirts of Greenwich, NY. With a snare, a kick, and an old beat up high hat, Carl began teaching himself how to play the drums while Adam and Zack played along on guitars, Luke on banjo and Dave on bass. Vocal melodies and harmonies were flowing like the beer from their cans and within a few hours, the group had written 2 songs front to back and it was obvious, at least to the brand new quintet, that they had immediately put together a sound that was just as unique as it was traditional. Week by week, song by song, the band quickly collaborated a full set-list of original music, recorded an album in a bedroom with two sm-58s and in 2011 released their debut album Greatest Hits Vol. 1. Eastbound Jesus continued to grow musically, as well as with members picking up Dylan Robinson on lead guitar, as Zack Infante took over on lap steel guitar. Writing music and picking up fans throughout the spring the band won the Saratoga Performing Arts Battle Of The Bands in 2011. Eastbound Jesus continues to grow musically and went into the studio in late November to record their album Holy Smokes which was released in January of 2012. The album represents a year as a band and the completely unique and exciting sound the members have all worked to develop.

    Blacksmith - Episode 142

    13 Mar 2012: The band toured up and down the east coast throughout much of 1985 headlining and supporting many of the times best known metal acts. In 1986 they would release their debut self titled EP. Europe immediately embraced the band (most notably England and Germany). More touring, radio airplay and media coverage followed. But just as quickly as they arrived, so too did they divide and fall. By the spring of 1987 the original line-up was over. However main-man David Smith was not ready to lay Blacksmith to rest and quickly recruited new players and picked up where the first version of the group left off. Several gigs and demos later Blacksmith signed with Tropical Records in late 1988. Tropical Records released 'Fire from Within' in early 1989. The band would hit the road to support the new release and played everywhere they possibly could. Once again Blacksmith caught worldwide press attention along with appearances on MTV and many regional cable access programs. The group would even have some of their music featured in several Fox syndicated television programs. With so much exposure, attention, and product endorsements it seemed Blacksmith were on a roll. But as the decade drew to a close so did interest in heavy metal or so it seemed. As the 90s began Dave would put Blacksmith to rest.
