Host Jackie Tantillo is proud to announce that "Should Have Listened To My Mother " has won a 2024 People's Choice Podcast Award for best podcast in the Society and Culture Category. SHLTMM is also a 2024 Nominee in two additional categories including, "Best Female" Hosted Podcast & "Best Podcast" in the Kids and Family category. SHLTMM is an ongoing conversation about mothers/female role models and the role they play/played in ones life. The mother/son, mother/daughter bond is unique for each of us and it is like no other. "You'll be amazed at human nature and how we can overcome our obstacles, says the podcast host. Our mother/son--mother/daughter relationship is such an integral part of who we are. What we choose to do with it, is up to us, not our mother. "Did your mom influence you by her actions or words or both? Are you who you are today because of or in spite of, your mother? What would you say to your mother if you could speak with her again today? This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn from others about who and/or what shaped their life. My guests, some of which share similar backgrounds, interestingly enough, had completely different outcomes in their future. Why is that? I hope you enjoy these timeless oral history recordings of the role mothers and maternal figures have played throughout society. The impact these women have on our lives is insurmountable. What the women that preceded us overcame has undeniably given us liberties and knowledge enabling us to have the bright future that we have. They opened so many doors regardless if they were in the eye of the nation or merely in the hearts of their children, and they should be given a voice. Yes hindsight is 20/20, but by sharing these stories now, we can help the next generations of mothers and give them the tools they need to stay healthy, balanced and strong for the betterment of their children and themselves.

    My guest's mother, Lesley, is Chinese Australian. Alana's maternal great grandfather left China for Australian and her paternal great grandfather came from Scotland. Australia is a big melting pot according to Alana. She says her grandparents didn't speak Chinese but their culture stayed in tack. One of the most important lessons Alana learned from a young age is "health is wealth," and she still stands by that expression today in her work as a Nutritionist and Naturopath. Her father started studying to become a chiropractor when she was a young girl. And Lesly had studied Bio Chemical Science and worked in hospital labs.

    “She was a lot of personality. She was full of energy, charismatic, hard worker who really cared about the people that she loved, her family, very committed to us, very protective," says my guest Mike Veny of his mother Deborah. This conversation revealed a number of different emotions, including how complicated love can be between a mother and child as well as how difficult the lost opportunities are for the conversations that didn't happen. Mike Veny is a wonderful guest who had a very lovely mother. Like he says, "she helped us become who we are today," referring to he and his brother. Mike also openly talks about his challenges with mental health, even as a young boy. He's a big advocate for mental wellbeing. He's an avid drummer and believes his drumming has helped him through many tough situations. My guest is also on the road quite a bit as a presenter at corporate events as a keynote mental health speaker, corporate drumming event facilitator, author and more.

    "Mom was a German Jew fleeing Germany, says my guest Henry Woodman about his mother, Margo. She was the product of the Jews leaving Germany and she never really recovered. Though, from the outside, she wanted everyone to think she had the perfect family, three kids and a husband. But from the inside, it was nothing further than truth. She held the full truth from her family regarding her father. Margo's mother was a spy during WWII after her husband left. There was a lot , in fact too much going on when Margo was a little girl. Unfortunately things kind of fell apart further down the line.

    Intuitive Channel, Stephanie Banks is my guest this week and she's sharing stories of her relationship with her mother Joanie. Joanie was a spectacular mom, full of life and love. "My mother was a very precious person and soul. She loved attention, bright colors and so much more," shares Stephanie. There are many layers to this story, including happiness, love, tragedy, mental illness and more and through it all Stephanie was able to have a soul connection with her mother, which she still has today though her mother is no longer present physically. And this is the significant message that Stephanie believes is possible for all of us, - "to stay connected to our loved ones in different plains, no matter how much time has past."

Lorraine Ackerman Shapiro taught first grade until she was 78 and only took one sick day in 60 years. As a petite woman, she was larger than life when it came to inspiring little minds and achieving the unachievable. "Her sheer force of imagination and will created another world for each of her students" says Michael, the eldest of her 3 children. He continues by saying, "she had big dreams."

    My guest, Jackie Dubrovich, is a first generation Belarus American and two time Olympic Foil Fencer. The USA Women's Foil Fencing Team took home the Gold Medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. This medal win, is the first time the USA Women's Foil Team has won an Olympic gold medal in the history of the sport. Jackie's first attempt to medal was at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which took place during the Pandemic. She joins SHLTMM to share stories of her mother, Valentina, who immigrated to the United States from Belarus, the former Soviet Union, to fulfill her dreams and begin a family in a country where she believed anything was possible.

    This episode of SHLTMM is the true story of a baby that was brought to The Hospital for the Maintenance and Education of Exposed and Deserted Young Children, outside of London, just prior to WWII. This baby girl, this foundling, is the mother of my guest, author and attorney, Justine Cowan. Justine's memoir, "The Secret Life Of Dorothy Soames," published in 2021, is heartbreaking yet evidence of ones ability to survive the unconscionable but not without eventual signs of trauma. It took years for my guest to unravel her mother's true past and sift through all the lies. But in writing this story, because of all the truths she uncovered, my guest has a different understanding of who her mother truly was.
