    Glasladies Beer Society

The Glasladies Beer Society is on a mission to connect beer-loving women (and non-binary folk) in Glasgow and this year they’re turning FIVE.  But they don’t just organise regular meetups, they have an annual beer festival too! The Beer is for Everyone festival is happening on 16 November in Glasgow with a focus on inclusivity, from accessibility to allowing kids and dogs. It’s a celebration of Scottish craft beer and culture for the whole family. Part of the proceeds will be going to two worthy charities: Scottish Action for Mental Health (SAMH) and The Women’s Centre Glasgow. Listen as Nix and Kristin talk through some of the Glasladies’ history, how they moved from a meetup to festival organisers and what they’re looking forward to at this year's festival. Get your tickets below, it promises to be amazing! 2. Ethos - Does it matter?

    Ethos - Does it matter?

In this week’s episode, Lisa, Thandi and Christina debate an ever-popular topic in beer (and other things!) - ethos. Does the ethos of a brewery influence you to buy, or not buy, their beer? What happens when breweries make good beer, but treat their staff badly, or are divisive in their politics? We chat about a few stories that have been in the news over the last few years, and debate our own feelings on separating art from artist.   Links: James Watt steps down: https://news.sky.com/story/brewdog-boss-calls-time-on-17-years-in-charge-13131591A timeline of Brewdog: https://www.thedrum.com/news/2022/01/24/brewdog-timeline-controversial-brandCommercial deception in Africa: https://www.anthropology-news.org/articles/problematic-brews-commercial-deception-modernity-and-the-pursuit-of-profit/Blue Moon (Coors) settles out of court after appropriation claims: https://www.just-drinks.com/news/belgium-belgian-brewers-resolve-dispute-with-coors-company-to-change-blue-moon-beer-labeling-packaging-and-taps/Osama Bin Lager, Kim Jong Ale and other controversial brews from Mitchell Brewing: https://www.gbnews.com/news/lincolnshire-pub-osama-bin-lager-controversial-beer-mocking-trump Mitchell Brewing website shut down after Osama Bin Lager sparks outrage: https://www.irishstar.com/news/us-news/osama-bin-lager-beer-controversy-32879973Bud Light boycott: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Bud_Light_boycott What we’re drinking: Chimay - BruneHope - Hop Off (NA) Beer Ladies Links:  All the beerladies links: https://linktr.ee/beerladiesChristina’s book from Camra: The Devil’s in the Draught Lines - https://shorturl.at/syBFPThe Devil’s in the Draught Lines on Amazon: https://shorturl.at/qLS08Lisa’s Pub Guide: https://www.weirdodublinpubs.com/Thandi’s (occasional) blog: http://www.craftgeeksa.com/ #beerladiespodcast #beerpodcast #beerculture Hosted on Acast. A Compendium of Irish Pints - with Ali Dunworth

This week we’re delving into the culture and customs around Irish Pints. Pints in Ireland are not simply having a drink - there are as many occasions as there are colours, and often the Irish customs are led by the occasion, whether wedding, funeral or after-work spontaneous pints. Ali Dunworth has written a marvellous, must-read book called A Compendium of Irish Pints documenting these nuances in a fun,  relatable way, with awesome illustrations by Stephen Heffernan. We’re chatting with Ali this week about the book and sharing experiences of pints. This is not to be missed! 4. How climate affects beer

    How climate affects beer

Have you ever wondered whether climate was responsible for beer styles emerging? Well, we did! So we’re digging into it a little - with how regional crops led to some of the styles we know today, and whether there is evidence of climate affecting beer historically. We also chat about how globalisation and industrialisation has impacted beer production and our own expectations, as well as how climate change is already (and will) impact beer of the future. Listen in, as we found this one very interesting.  Links: The Harvest Crisis of 1647-50: https://www.jstor.org/stable/40057648 Beer styles: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beer_style Evolution of Beer over time: https://www.washingtonpost.com/food/interactive/2023/beer-history-types-timeline/The regional uniqueness of Beer: https://www.ucd.ie/geary/static/publications/workingpapers/gearywp202013.pdf Various articles on how climate change is affecting beer today:https://pse.agriculturejournals.cz/pdfs/pse/2020/10/06.pdfhttps://www.nature.com/articles/s41477-018-0263-1https://www.nature.com/articles/s41477-018-0263-1https://academicjournals.org/journal/AJAR/article-full-text/3943BE650358https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0168192309000392https://cordis.europa.eu/article/id/447330-climate-change-is-making-beer-taste-worsehttps://www.irishexaminer.com/news/arid-41245678.html What we’re drinking: 🍻 Two Sides X 57 The Headline: Shop Local (IPA)🍻 Low Tide: Brune DMC Beer Ladies Links:  All the beerladies links: https://linktr.ee/beerladiesChristina’s book from Camra: The Devil’s in the Draught Lines - https://shorturl.at/syBFPThe Devil’s in the Draught Lines on Amazon: https://shorturl.at/qLS08Lisa’s Pub Guide: https://www.weirdodublinpubs.com/Thandi’s (occasional) blog: http://www.craftgeeksa.com/ #beerladiespodcast #beerpodcast #beerhistory  Hosted on Acast.
