The Need for Nutrition Education in Medical Training | EP 99

The lack of nutrition education in medical training is a critical issue that warrants immediate attention. In this episode of the NTI PodTalk, we delve into the critical gaps in nutrition training within medical education and the pressing need for healthcare professionals to understand the profound impact of diet on health. As healthcare continues to evolve, it is imperative that we prioritize the integration of nutrition into medical curricula. Join Dianne Koehler for a fascinating conversation with Jenny Breen, a culinary educator and advocate for nutrition in medical training. Learn how Jenny is bridging the gap between food, health, and medical education. About Jenny: Jenny Breen, Chef, MS Ed, MPH has been working at the intersection of human, community, and environmental health in the Twin Cities and throughout the country for 25 years. She creates custom training and learning experiences focused on personal or professional food, health and sustainability skills, and/or delivering programming and community engagement based in human and planetary health, wellbeing, equity, and justice. Jenny teaches 3 classes through the Bakken Center for Spirituality and Healing at the University of Minnesota, who's content and classes utilize cooking and basic nutrition information to address all aspects of human and community health including the social determinants of health-environmental and structural barriers within the system that impact people's abilities to access and implement healthy food and wellbeing behaviors. While cooking is foundational to the courses Jenny teaches, they also integrate skills and resources to approach systemic change and lead individuals/patients, care teams, practitioners and administrators to collectively impact the upstream effects of SDH on humans’/patients’ health and wellbeing, and to move toward equity that translates to a healthier food system and a healthier community. Implementing healthy habits with a busy work and family life is no small feat. In this episode of the NTI PodTalk, Alison Wasinger shares her passion for helping families navigate the chaos of busy, daily schedules while maintaining health and wellness. From meal planning to movement, Alison offers practical advice for busy families, even for those with demanding jobs, like her firefighter husband. Alison Wasinger is a recent graduate of the Nutrition Therapy Institutes' Nutrition Therapist Master Certification program.   Prior to receiving her certification, Alison received a bachelor's degree in Exercise Science and a master’s degree in Food and Nutrition Science from Florida State University. She spent over 10 years in the fitness industry in a variety of roles from one-on-one personal training to multi-unit and multi state management of facilities. Returning to our Ancestral Diets with Jenny Powers, PhD | EP 95

The transition from our ancestral diets to our modern day diets has left us in an evolutionary mismatch. By returning to a more ancestral-like diet, we can regain alignment with our evolutionary biology and promote better health. Meet Jenny Powers, PhD, the co-author of the book, "On the Origin of Being: Understanding the Science of Evolution to Enhance Your Quality of Life." In this episode of the NTI PodTalk, Dianne and Jenny delve into the concept of evolutionary mismatch in modern diets and its impact on health and wellness, the influence of corporations on our food choices, and how we can reclaim our ancestral diet for better health.  About Jenny: Jenny Powers is a mom, a writer, a scientist, and an athlete from Colorado. Her PhD is in Immunology, but she left academia to be a mom and to pursue a writing career. Up to that point, she'd only ever written scientific journal articles, so the opportunity to research and write "On the Origin of Being" with Luke Comer, her co-author, felt like kismet. It allowed her scientific training and passion for writing to come together in many ways. She learned so much about her own health and wellness on the journey of writing this book and continues to learn more every day with the connections she has made through the book. **Timestamps for the topics discussed can be found on this episode's NTI PodTalk page Are you ready to start your journey as a Nutrition Therapist Master or Natural Food Chef?
