How Great Leaders Become Extraordinary with Jackie Insinger

In Episode 5 of ‘The Powerhouse CEO’, your host Kelly Fidel speaks with Jackie Insinger, CEO and Founder of ‘Insinger Insight’. Jackie brings her expertise in cognitive psychology interpersonal dynamics to the business world as a sought-after Executive and Team Dynamics Coach. She helps leaders and teams focus on their unique strengths and authentic connection. Jackie shares her views on ‘How Great Leaders Become Extraordinary’. Episode Highlights: Jackie answers the one question that inspired her to help great leaders become extraordinary. Leadership and managing people isn't a natural skill to 90% of people, it is learned so it is teachable. Jackie’s inspiration of helping people become great leaders came from using the incredible research tools that she has written about in her new book, and how to understand discover, connect, motivate, communicate and help people grow. People are born with influence and they can also learn it. We have to be very intentional about how we show up because it disseminates throughout the whole organization. Results and great things happen when the people feel valued and connected, so team dynamics are essential. Jackie talks about her NEW book - ‘Spark Brilliance’ and how to join the waitlist. 3 Key Points: Jackie helps high-achieving great leaders become extraordinary. This idea of ‘it begins with you’ in the first line of the book is based on the neuroscience of emotional contagion, which is where we mirror the mood, the impact behaviors of people around us. A leader has increasingly more impact on contagion, than people who are at other levels in a company. When you show up with an optimistic outlook using the prefrontal cortex, part of your brain that shows possibilities and positivity, that is contagious and that spreads throughout just as fast as the negative does. Tweetable Quotes: “There's no cap on growth, there's no cap on potential, that's inherent in the word itself - potential” - Jackie Insinger “A book’s like your baby, it's your creation, it's vulnerable, it's nerve-wracking and it’s exciting.” - Jackie Insinger “I love that you always incorporate fun to write because if it's always just business, it will get boring and when it gets boring, we all punch out.” - Kelly Fidel “We take on secondhand stress and we also take on positive emotion.” - Jackie Insinger “It takes the consciousness and the learned skill of a leader to create that First Team.” - Kelly Fidel “Through very specific action steps it just makes the world an easier and a better place to live” - Jackie Insinger “I love how connections happen in moments, not meetings, and that is for life, not just business.” - Kelly Fidel Resources Mentioned: Jackie Insinger: Website Kelly Fidel: Kelly’s Website Kelly’s Facebook Kelly’s Instagram Kelly’s LinkedIn Kelly’s YouTube

How To Create a Sustainable Business with Ann Farrell

Your host, Kelly Fidel of The Powerhouse CEO speaks with Ann Farrell, Founder of Quantum Endeavors. Ann shares what she’s learned from her decades in the corporate world before leaving to start her own business. They discuss negotiation, challenges Ann has faced, advice for coaches, and more. Episode Highlights: Ann was the first woman to climb from entry-level to the top of the house at her Fortune 200 company and has over 30 years’ experience in the business. She works with executives and coaches to grow and scale their businesses. Responsible for Purchasing and Logistics, Ann ran a budget of $8 billion. Once she became a mother, Ann experienced many moments of questioning how her business career has defined her. Ann approached the CEO of the organization before she retired and pitched her own coaching business to them as a win-win solution to her leaving. Negotiation always has to come from a place of asking “How do we win?” Ann left the corporate world to become an entrepreneur so she could have more flexibility and to spend more time with her son but found herself falling back into her working habits from the corporate world anyway. There were many different wake-up calls for Ann about needing to do something differently, from being diagnosed with breast cancer to feeling perpetually working. Ann began to license her process and approach to coach and train other coaches, she now has over 200 licensed coaches under her brand. Ann says that her greatest accomplishment is being known as someone who has done everything from the heart. Coaches pay a lot of money to learn how to coach individuals, but there’s little support or training for how to coach for organizations, and that is what Ann teaches. The coaches that make a good living are the coaches who work with organizations. If you know how to coach individuals, you have the foundation to coach organizations because organizations and Ann provides you what's needed to succeed. Three years from now, Ann hopes to be thinking about and reflecting on what a wonderful ride her career has been and how grateful she is for the people in her life. 3 Key Points: When negotiating, look for ways to find a mutual win. It is difficult to break the habits built up from decades in the corporate world. Doing things with purpose and from the heart is the most important thing. Sharable Quotes: “It’s just wrong for me to feel like I have to choose between the two. And so there is an ‘and’. So it was all about finding the ‘and’ for me and for the leaders that I support.” –Ann Farrell “I had to almost retrain me. There’s a different way to be an entrepreneur than there is to be a corporate employee.” –Ann Farrell “If we’re not having fun and it’s our own business, then we should just go get another corporate gig. That’s not why we’re here. That’s not why we chose to do it differently.” –Ann Farrell Resources Mentioned: Ann Farrell: Quantum Endeavors Website Ann’s Linkedin Kelly Fidel: No Glass Ceiling Website Kelly’s Facebook Kelly’s Instagram Kelly’s Linkedin Kelly’s YouTube

How to Find Ideal Clients: Dallas Hogensen, VP, LYFT

Your host Kelly Fidel talks to Dallas Hogensen, VP of Sales at Lyft, about why sales evoke an emotional response, the importance of identifying a company’s core values, and book recommendations. Episode Highlights:  Sales is about people, not product. The effect of one bad client or deal or sale has an effect for longer than any good client. When you scale a business quickly, there are opportunity costs. Lyft sacrificed operational efficiency for the sake of scaling up and growing their sales team. The one area in which you should never make a concession for the sake of scale is company culture and values. The ideal client for Lyft has changed over time, and the strategy has been to pursue what they have defined as the ideal client unless or until they discover they are wrong or that it has changed. Lyft’s valuation grew from $500,000 to $70 million in about 14 months. Lyft has something called the Wonka Room, which you enter through a tiny, hidden door, into a whimsical room where employees can go for some quiet time and to reconnect with the company’s history and values. Too many sales teams are hiring at a fast rate and throwing people into the game without proper preparation, which is the only way to calm the fear of rejection and exercise the muscle to sell. Dallas’s sales team has had so many successes because he teaches them a process and helps his employees become self-aware about their skills and improvement. All the scripts in the world can’t compensate for understanding the psychology behind sales. He instituted a peer review and self-review of sales calls every week that centers on asking questions like “Why did you ask that?” “Why did you find that interesting?” because that leads to self-awareness. Dallas has an extensive morning routine for several hours before leaving for work to take care of himself so he can better manage his team. Lyft grew and scaled up slowly in order to avoid compromising their core values or experience. Lyft allowed Uber to make growth inroads first so that they could come in afterward and counter what they did with different messaging and a different experience. Not all salespeople are motivated by money, so don’t treat your staff as if that’s the only reason to do the work. If you’re keeping your head down and doing what you need to do for your business, there won’t be a need to worry about your competition.  Something that led to Dallas’s success is not being afraid to ask questions and say when he didn’t know something. 3 Key Points: In scaling a business, don’t lose sight of the people and core values making that possible. The real meat of sales is the preparation and process. Self-awareness and an ability to evaluate yourself is crucial to improving your sales performance. Tweetable Quotes: “Number one: Values have to be stated. If they’re not clear, and if you can’t say the values the same way I do, then there’s no value set.” –Dallas Hogensen “I have this theory called The Lego Theory, which is that little chunks of time motivates big results.” –Dallas Hogensen  Resources Mentioned: Dallas Hogensen: Twitter The Score Takes Care of Itself Turn the Ship Around Ego is the Enemy Kelly Fidel: Facebook, Instagram, Linkedin, YouTube www.noglassceiling.com

Shattering the Glass Ceiling: Phyllis James, EVP, MGM Resorts

Your host Kelly Fidel,  talks to Phyllis James, Chief Diversity Officer of MGM Resorts, about diversity in procurement and positioning your business to get and retain clients. Episode Highlights:  MGM Resorts is committed to inclusion and practices it at every level of the business operations, internally and externally. Not only is supporting women-owned businesses the right thing to do, but it also benefits MGM Resorts. Phyllis introduces Kenyatta Lewis, the Executive Director of Supplier Diversity & Sustainable Procurement at MGM Resorts, and shares an example of a popular product they sell from a woman-owned business that Kenyatta found. Be honest about your product and what it has to offer in the current marketplace. Phyllis sees herself as a facilitator to allow her employees to shine in the workplace. Find what you are passionate about, that your product or service offers that differentiates it from other options in the marketplace. MGM Resorts does not have just one initiative, they are constantly on the lookout for new products and services to improve the experience at their resorts. They do not operate on any sort of quota for diverse businesses.  3 Key Points: Preparation is necessary to make sure you are presenting your best self and best business. Do your homework and know something about the client you are trying to market your product to. Approach interviews to sell your product with a long-term view to build a relationship rather than making a one-time sale.  Tweetable Quotes: “Just the fact that you’re women-owned is not persuasive. If it was at one time, it no longer is. Because believe it or not, there are many women-owned businesses out there and there’s keen competition.” –Phyllis James “We’ve had people not know the basics of doing business, like how do you present a proposal, how do you conduct yourself in an interview, how do you show up looking & acting at the interview? We’ve had people flunk all of those tests, meaning they did not prepare.” –Phyllis James   Resources Mentioned: Kelly Fidel: Facebook, Instagram, Linkedin, YouTube www.noglassceiling.com
